protein skimmer on while salt disolves?

i have my protein skimmer running on the valve wide-open right now while my salt fully disolves (i.e. nothing is entering the waste container yet). i was reading through my marine setup book a few minutes ago and it said to leave the PS off until the nitrogen cycle completes.

1) can i go ahead and leave on the PS right now just to hurry along the salt disolving? (fyi, the tank is completely empty right now other than water and salt)

2) if using 4" deep live sand and about 1-1.5 lbs/g live rock (already cured), is it really necessary to leave the PS off during the cycling time?

Cliff,
If you have no real waste being produced (fish pooping or LR curing) you won't have anything for the protein skimmer to remove. It won't hurt to leave it running right now, just use electricity.

What's more, once fish get added to the setup, you may have to reconfigure the skimmer. In other words, don't place the skimmer too far out of reach. :)

Happy Easter!
