ProClear 150 Wet/Dry Conversion

Has anyone converted a wet/dry sump to incorporate a refugium area to replace the bioball section. I plan on replacing the bioballs with live rock anyway.

I am adding MH Pendents to my tank and they clip on the tank rim so I may have to remove my HOB refugium and do not have room for it in my stand where the sump is, so may have to consider some consolidation.

I included a pic of the wet/dry sump. I was considering converting the bio ball section into a refugium section by removing the egg crate and gluing a panel at the bottom where the big spunge is so that the water would be forced to run into the return chamber through holes I would drill at the top of the divider rather than through the sponge into the return chamber.

My main concern is that if I did this what would happen when the pump was shut off. Currently the chambers fill with water until the tank water level goes below the HOB overflow box and the return hose drains back into the sump and does not overflow the sump. I am thinking that I could control the water level in the bioball section (converted to refugium) by placing the holes or cut out at a level that would still allow room for water to drain back into the sump when the pump was shut off. Considering the mud layer how deep should the refugium level be. I plan on including LR rubble in the fuge area for additional filtration.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
