Pregnant seahorse

I'm pretty sure my male is pregnate.COuld I hjave some advice oin how to raise them. I'll most likely get some rotifers from michelle. Help plese before it happens.

great page matt!

we used to raise them, but not very successful, because of the 3rd stage feeding.

they start with rotifers, then bbs, then the third stage would be pods such as amphipods or mysid shrimp. We stumbled at that b/c we didn't have an excessive amount of pods, and they wouldn't take cyclopeez

We used a lettuce crisper we got at walmart, and float it in the main seahorse tank, this way they won't suck in air. They're just so cute.

But still a pita.

Erectus are the easiet to raise. They are large enough to eat newly hatched brine shrimp after birth.

They won't make it in your fuge. They need to go in a small tank all by themselves. You can't use a filter because they will get sucked up in it. I usually start them off in a 5 gallon with a airstone and sponge for biological. I also use sand from the main tank to keep the water stable but this sometimes causes hydroids. Even with this I do small daily water changes to keep the water stable. You want to start with a small tank so it will be easier for them to find the food. I recommend only trying to raise about 30 yourself and giving the rest away. If you try to raise too many you end up compromising all of them because it is hard to keep up with the amount of food they need. After they get bigger and start eating frozen food I transfer mine to a 10 gallon that has a divider in the middle. I put the babies on one side and a filter on the other.

first of all, the fuge won't have enough food for them.
second, they'll need to be in some sort of kreisel tank system so they don't suck in air.
The tank /water needs to be extra clean, if they're scratching themselves w/ their tail, the ammonia is too high
the temp needs to be constant
they need to be fed constantly and you can't do that in a fuge
you'll need to grow rotifers, and have bbs. you'll also need a good pod population for 3rd stage feeding.

there're lots of things needed to raise babies...

Erectus babies don't need a kreisel. A kreisel is a must for Reidi or Kuda so they don't suck air. Erectus also don't need rotifers. Rotifers are great to offer but you don't have to offer them.

The three that I have left were 2 years old last month.

Here are some of my favorite pictures of mine when they were babies.

It actually depends on what species of Erectus you have. I've had both Northern and Southern Erectus. Northern are pelagic at birth and tend to float in clumps and are tiny much like reidi and need rotifers or pods at birth.

The southern are much larger at birth, hitch straight away and eat bbs at birth.

I had a batch of Northern a few weeks ago and wasn't prepared with rotifers, I tried the bbs and was surprised how large even one of those looked besides these fry.

You definitely need to setup their own rearing tank. Make sure you have brine shrimp eggs ready to go...even practice hatching them. They will need to be fed 3-4 times a day, and lots of waterchanges to keep water quality up.

Good luck -it's a ton of work.
