Powder coat or galvanized

Powder coat or galvanized

I am building a steel frame today for my in wall 105.
Have the option of having it coated either way.
Can it be galvanized? Pros-cons

Thanks,
Jeff

Hrmm.. powder coat is harder than paint, but it will chip if hit hard enough. Galvanized can flake off if the zinc mix isn't consistent, but usually not.

I think either would do.

do not galvanize. If water gets splashed on it it will rust quick. I would go with powder coat for sure. said:
Actually, well galvanized metal won't rust. That's why deck screws and high voltage electrical towers are galvanized.

Flaking is a concern. Especially since the sump and equipment will be under it.

I can get it galvanized in one day for free.
A friend takes a load of street light frames to OKC every night and returns the next day.

Powder coating will cost me and take an extra week.

Hot dip? Yah.. either would probably work. For coolness factor, a candy apple red powder coat would be awesome :)

edit: and you'd have to be careful with hot dip 'drips'. I'd go over it with a stiff wire brush to knock off any zinc whiskers that could be hanging on it.

One thing about pwder coating is it does not coat the inside. It only covers areas you coul paint your self. Now with that said I would still suggest powder coating. The only thing you have to do is make sure all your end as sealed up to where you can't get to the inside of the frame.

Yea.. it would look cool..

I am going to be at the mercy of what color thay are running this week. It will take longer if I choose a specific color..
Trying to get it done quick and since it is going in the wall color is not that big of a deal

If they preclean the stand it applies an iron phosphate layer to the steel which makes the powdercoat literally bond to the steel. Reason I know this is I have 3 powdercoat booths at the shop I run.

I expect it will be blasted and cleaned. Will ask on the process.
Waiting on a return call from Quality Powdercoat.

Thanks,
Jeff

It was probably electro-galvanized. It's notorious for being cheap. Most HVAC duscting is electro-galvanized, and it does fine as long as you dont kink or flex it too much. Any flex can cause the zinc to peel away from the steel, which will cause rust.

The zinc coating will oxidize (rust) but zinc oxide doesn't affect the structural integrity of the surface, nor does it break away like iron ozide.

Powder coating is the most popular option. I don't know anyone that has gotten their stand galvanized.

Or are you trying to be a trail blazer?

All I know is that hot dip galvanizing is best for saltwater boat trailers, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't be the best option for metal stands.

I finished building the frame this morning and dropped it off to be blasted and powder coated.
Not real pretty but will be functional. And allot more room for equipment than the 2x6 stand I built last week. (anyone need a real heavy DIY wood stand)
I built this one out of 1 ½” thick wall tube steel and will cover the top and lower shelf with ¾ plywood.

I ended up using a different company for powder coating in Dallas.
They are running a large job this week and added mine in.

$65 for blasting and coating and will be done tomorrow afternoon..
Less than half the cost of the other quotes.

I had the choice of flat black, beige or white. Went ahead with flat black.
