Powder Blue Tang

Saw a powder blue tang and fell in love! However, instead of making an impulse purchase, I decided to come home to research and gather opinions from the experts. I have a orange shoulder tang - roughly 6 1/2in - in a 175. If I purchase the powder blue tang, will there be problems between the two?

How big is the blue tang? And how much room is in your tank? Also make sure you hospital tank the BLUE as it will certainly develop ICH. This is common with most tangs as they all stress easily. More so with the powders blue and brown. I have had powder blue tangs at different times. The purchases size and maturity of the powder blue tang is also a factor if he is smaller he will most likely get bullied by all the current tangs. If he is same size or larger this will limit the terrotorial fighting. Also tank size plays an important part. If you put 5 tanges in a 75 gallon they will fight but if you put 6 in a 300 gallon there is room for all of them. And you can to the group to check out my build log. It has all 10 of my tangs in one 300 gallon tank and all happy. Feel free to post more if you need help thanks CURT.SMITH

Curt, thanks for the reply. I've seen your build and followed along in admiration. The powder blue I saw was about 5-6in. As far as room, I'd like to think I have room to spare, but then I could be wrong. See pic below and please advice. I don't want to make a purchase then everything goes haywire!

A powder blue tang is also the one fish I've always wanted for my tank, but I'd always been wary of their reputation as ich magnets since I don't have a qt. About two years ago I gave in and got one that seemed healthy enough and that was a couple weeks removed from collection. Sure enough, he got ich within a couple days and took about 80% of my fish with him including a purple tang and yellow tang that had been in the tank over 6 yrs.

I still don't have a qt but I decided that I would only give a pbt another shot if I could find a tank-raised one. It's taken a year and a half but I finally found one just the other day. I'm living dangerously again, as I dropped him directly in my display He'd been thriving ich free in Aaron's (aball011) tank for over a year though so I figure it's kind of like he's been in qt for that long. So far so good, as he's clearly accustomed to tank life and ate nori and pellets immediately. He even knows to come out when I walk by the tank with the jar of pellets. I really think finding a tank raised one like this is the way to go for notoriously sickly fish like these.

As far as conflict goes, my naso pretty much ignored him. My yellow chased him around the first day but has pretty much relaxed since.

Anyway, good luck with finding a nice specimen. They really are about as good looking as fish get.
