In 2007, quite a few DFWMAS members made the trip south to collect peppermint shrimp. I finally got those pages done. I'm sure you'll recognize a few faces in these pictures.

If any of you still have livestock from that trip, be sure to tell us how they are doing to this day.

In my own systems, I still have the tiny eel, the rock anemone, and possibly a couple of peppermint shrimp. The nerites didn't last more than a month, and the gobies & sargeant majors eventually died as well.

I didn't go to this year's event, and just heard from a MARSH member that the turn out was down. I guess the economy is really hitting all of us. :(

I still have my gobies (actually i think they are blennies) from last years trip. Nerites and Shrimp are long gone.

Very cool!

I'm surprised you found that Eel. Was he out in a grass bed, or up in the jetty (the later would really surprise me!)

I'm looking at taking a scuba trip to Florida to do a little collecting. I really want a little Atlantic Longsnout Butterfly, and no one carries them.

Where else is good to go collecting (that isn't too far off)?

It was in the tall grassy area where you saw people stepping into the water carrying their gear. We found all kinds of stuff in there.

That sounds like the right spot to be looking. Good find, he's a cutie.

I'm apparently pretty good at finding pipefish. The last time I was in Cozumel, I found 36 of them on one 80' dive (moslty around 40'), the local DM (who was looking hard) only found 11. Next time ya go collecting let me know, I'll bring my gear and grab some good stuff!

Awesome, I love this kind of thing. I did the same thing a few years back at Destin, Fl. I got tons of snails, what looked like white legged hermits, some crazy shrimp, and a pipe fish from some sargassum grass.
On another note, how is the water beach wise in that area. I was hoping to go to the texas coast for the first time this weekend. I moved here last summer.

Port A public beach is not bad. Plus you can drive an hour or so further down the road into Corpus Christi and those are much nicer. Mind you nothing like a Florida or California beach (Water not as clear) but still nice.

This Port A trip happens every year in July. Makes for a fun weekend. LIke Marc said it is about 6 hours south of here and I am sure if you ask around you will find a few folks that make the trip often during the summer.

Or you can post on MARSH and they will tell you some of the best collection spots are.

When I lived in Florida I had a 125 galllon tank with a 50 gallon sump/fuge. I used to collect emerald crabs, coral banded shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, cucumbers, brittle stars, live rock, mantis shrimp, a tang, a couple high hats, a baby french angel, and lots of other stuff. My tank was full of florida stuff.

I'm not sure if it would work for pepermint shrimp or not, but... we used to go "shrimping" at night back home in Florida. Get a lantern and a little bit of rope. Hang the lantern over the edge of the dock just above the water and wait for the shrimp and crabs to come to you. All you need is a bucket and a fine mesh net (ours was on a 10' pole) that I'm sure you'll be able to find around the coast. The fish that come up will be too quick, but you'll be able to scoop up the shrimp and crabs that flutter up to the surface to see whats going on. We did this off of the bridges and would fill a cooler full of shrimp every night, but they ended up on the table and not in the tank!
