Pond Filter

I know this is not salt related, but I"m sure some salties have ponds in their backyards too. I have 2000 gallon pond in backyard that has never in its 15 year existence had a filter on it. I would like to have the water clear to see the goldfish/koi. What is the best method for doing this economically?

Is there a cannister filter you all use? Like an FX5 or something bigger? Do you all make your own out of plastic large 55 gallon drum? Is it really important to have a UV filter in it? If I just put like a strong koralia close to the surface will that keep is relatively clean enough? I'm just looking to have from the top clearer looking water.

Well I don't have a pond, yet... But I have been researching a lot. I would suggest a bio filter of some sort (55g drum, canister), a uv filter and a phoam phraxionator. The phoam phraxionator is really neat! Google it, there is a great build on another forum, koiphen I believe.

I had a UV filter on my last pond and LOVED it. It was obvious when the bulb would burn out. I will not consider building another pond without one. It is probably the only piece of pond equipment that I would consider non-negotiable.

I used a Sacramento Koi bead filter with UV. They sell plug and play systems, but they are not cheap.
