Planning a 300-400 Gallon Tank

Hello all,

I have had a 175 gallon bowfront up and running for the last 3-4 years. Before that, I had a DAS 70 gallon for 6 years. I am now ready to build a dream tank in the range of 300-400 gallons but have a lot of questions to answer beore I can go on.

First of all how thick? I am intersted in a glass tank of dimensions of 96"L x 30"W x 26"H or similar (still contemplating). I have received a few quotes and have noticed that some builders will use 1/2" and some will not. So what does that tell me? It is ok, or not?

Next questions is about the stand. Does a tank of this size need to be made of tubular steel or is angled steel sufficient?

Another question I have is glass type. Assuming I go with a 1/2" glass, is it necessary to use Starfire? I have heard if you use 3/4" or thicker it makes a significant differnce, but not at 1/2".

Thanks a good start for now and thanks for the help

might look at the 300 gallon marineland tanks they look nice saw one at macna last year and was very impressed.

like Nicki i went through Scott Comstock to build my stand I was very impressed with his work.

This is the company that I was talking to you about. High quality, probably big $$$$. I haven't looked at anything but the craftmanship and it is top notch.

Don't worry about gallon size, but get the dimensions that you really really want. I love the depth of the Marineland tank. There is one at True Perc if you want to see one set up. IMO, a 3 foot depth is a must. 8X3X2.2 with external overflows is a pretty sweet tank! The size of the glass is all about the bond of the seals. I wouldn't want anything less than 3/4 inch.

No closed loops under any circumstance.

Gotta get the kids to bed.

Starfire isn't necessary to use its a option, up to your opinion and $$$

I have heard it other way around if you use 3/4" or thicker it makes NO significant difference and is waste of money .

the stand is up to u as well i like metal stand cause u can make it with less supports to get in your way. but also almost all tank manufactures say if it isnt on there stand warranty is void ? i am looking at marine land 300 affordable and good quality

Pampee - Well I definitely want an 8' tank, so the marineland wont work for me. But I agree, its is a sweet tank!

Ryan - I love the idea of the 36" wide tank, but my will be on a wall for now and not in a wall. The depth plus external overflows will cause a space issue for me.

I have another concern. Will a tank that size cause foundation problems? It will be placed on the front corner of the slab. Has anyone encoutered this?

james at LSA is the best to address foundation and weight load. At approx 8.5 lbs/gallon, the load should be fine. My 400 gallon tank isn't completely set on the concrete.

I think he's talking about James who owns Lone Star Aquatics (aka Bayou)

On a tank that size I wouldn't go less the 3/4", but then I wouldn't want a top brace
