Pink Birdsnest Color

I got a pink birdsnest about 3 weeks ago and it has been brown the whole time it has been in my tank. It was brown when i got it, but figured it just had to acclimate to my lights. I am running 2 250w MH 15000k, 1 54w fiji purple, and 2 54w ati blue. I run my MH around 8 hrs a day and the rest around 12 hrs a day. The polyps are out and the tips are white and growing. How long does it usually take for it to get the pink color back?? It is the one on the right in the pic. Not the best pic, but you get the idea.

It may stay that color forever. Pink is also a relative term for birds nests that I've seen.

Oh an off note, make sure to keep any other coral several inches away, especially types with feeder tentacles. I've seen birds nest fall over and die within hours of another coral realizing its around.

I agree mine is more of a reddish with just a hint of pink color. Ive seen many different colors of a pink birdsnest that all came from the same colony so I believe that it has a bunch to do with your tank peram's and your lights.

i have a sour apple birdsnest I picked up, I fragged it and put the frag higher in the tank under my 6bulb t5ho and it became pinkish with teal tips
the mother colony at the bottom of the tank stayed an amber with green tips

I hear that you have to have some 10K to get the super pink color out of one. I took a super pink frag and put it under my 20K's and ended up with a pruplish one with blue accent.

+1 on that- 10K is the spectrum the hot pink will show up in...
maybe add a 10K T5...

I just took an old frag of pink birds nest I found behind my rock work and placed it under my LED's. I will see what kind of color I can get out of it. Not much color to start with since it was behind the rock work, but its alive. Will post a pic and see how it goes.

My hot pink birdsnest is actually more pink under my 14k. But then again, it's much higher under the 14k than it was under the 12k. More intense lighting = more pink? Also depends on where urs came from. There are probably many variations of "pink" birdsnests out there. I picked mine up from another member's colony who had super bright pink, so i knew something was up when it turned dull on me.

The intensity of light doesn't have any effect of pink on the birds nest. I took one from a fellow reefer on the forum under t5's. Hot pink. It was purple/blue under my 1500Watts of MH's. Now that I have the same coral under my LED's, I'm starting to get alittle pink out of it. Once my lights come on I will take a pic. I have multiple spectrums throughout the day including 10k on my current lighting to ensure each coral gets a variety of photosynthetic food throughout the day.

I have a pink birdsnest aswell, what ive noticed under LEDs is that during the sunny part of the day you can see the pink, but as the lights come down in the evening the coral doesnt portray the pink.

your right, I have 2 10k lights over mine and just moved a frag from the mother colony to the top of tank and now it's teal and pink and growing great....while mother at bottom is sour apple looking in same tank conditions and lights
1 pink growth, 2 antinics and a reef crest similar to 12k

I have noticed the same on my birds nest. It was light brown a week and a half ago. During the day when I have a 10Kish spectrum this is what it looks like. This is the new part of my aquarium where I added the new live rock. The other corals on here were added today, so they have no color. I guess fedex stole all the color, because they looked nice on the web when I bought them. [smilie=rofl.gif] . I think when I go to 20k it looks purplish.

Thanks for all the replies. I think when i change my HM i am going to go with 10k. I have 20k in them now with 2 ATI blue actinics and one FIGI Purple 54w T5. I like the light combo, but would like the pink to really pop.

Well that's just it. The pink will really pop, but it may be hard to get the rest to pop. That's why most choose 20k. It basically just leaves out the birds nest.

After exposing this coral to 10K half the day and 20K the other half, this picture was taken 9 days later, its getting allot pinker. I think that some of the red corals don't like the 10K spectrum as much but I will ride that out for a while to see what happens. I may have to do 10K for 20 percent. Here is the updated pic. Did you get a 10K bulb?
