Today I had to buy some ziplock baggies and found Mrs Wages Pickling Lime just to the left. It comes in a round white plastic container with a screw on lid. $2.29 a container.

Since this is seasonal, this may be the time to stock up locally.

What a guy ! I hope the Kroger's in Irving will have it. I just got a new Nielson reactor and need to get some. Thanks Marc!

I've still got a good bit of Tri's lime left, but have a Kroger just a few blocks from home. I'll check it out and let my fellow Planoians know if it's available locally!

Thanks Marc!

you make kalkwasser with it to help increase or maintain your calcium levels. It also helps to increase the pH of your saltwater aquarium.

The Krogers in Coppell actually has it year-round. Not *much* of it, but it's there.

It's in the area with the baggies, the trash bags, and the mason jars :D

North arlington only had 3 on the shelves. I bought all three..

Nice lookin out marc....

Now... Whats the shelf life of this stuff? Also, how much per gallon are you supposed to dose /drip?

does anyone with a large tank dose pickling lime?
just curious how ya do it? I've read about dosing somewheres ~1 tablespoon/ gallon. For my setup alone, thats 260 tablespoons (without sump volume) or 16.25 cups. That comes out to about 2 1/2 of these 16oz, 1lb containers of lime...

Any insight???

Before anyone nukes their tanks:

Dosing procedure

Use 1 teaspoon per gallon of RO/DI water. Mix it well.
Let it settle for an hour, or even overnight.
Siphon out all the kalkwasser into your dosing container, making sure not to suck up the sediment nor the skin on the surface - these are not to be added to your tank.
Set up your drip rate in an area of high flow, from 1 - 3 drops per second.

Keep in mind, there are other ways and each person's system is different. You'll need to tailor this to the needs of your tank. (.5 to 2 tsp per gallon)

Kalkwasser has a pH of 12. You need to be careful that you don't overdose the tank.

Kalkwasser can cause some pumps to seize up as the impellar becomes coated with deposits. The pumps can be cleaned by soaking the impellar in vinegar and water.

Some use kalkwasser as their top off source. Do your reef a favor and limit the total amount that could possibly be added in one session if everything possible went wrong. If you have a 29g tank, you don't want 10g of kalkwasser in your top off resevoir. 3g would be risky, but survivable.

Please ask for more input before you try this out, and don't assume anything. We have plenty of members that have used kalkwasser and can help you get a good understanding of what you can and can't do.

ok i just went out and bougth some. i'm still not quite sure of what you mean on your instructions. i have a 55g "tall" how many tps do you suggest me using at a time and how often? do i mix it in a container over night then move the mixture into another container without the bottom layer? sorry about all the questions i am still VERY new at this.

This has nothing to do with the size of the reef tank. You are adding lime powder to a resevoir of water that will be dripped into the tank. So 1 tsp. per gallon of RO water is what you'd need.

You really really gotta read up this and fully understand what you are doing with this. There is a right way and a "oh s*** I just killed everything in my tank" way, so proceed with caution. I was thinking of dripping kalk but it requires too much attention(daily), so I'm getting ready to have someone build or help me build a kalk reactor.

Cheers!

Ron, once you get everything going, dripping kalkwasser doesn't have to be that time consuming.. I spend 10 minutes a day changing out the bottle and refilling / adding powder to the empty one.

Yea.. that's everyday , I work 7a-7p on a 3-4 rotation so that would kinda bite for me. I travel on short notice for work sometimes and I do take vacations...I wouldn't trust a friend or neighbor to take care of that when I'm away...it's better for me to get a reactor. I have seen lots of folk that drip Kalk and must say the benefit's do outweigh the risk's as long as it's done right.

Cheers!

so i basicly make the mixture then start to drip it in 2-3 drop/sec all day? is this a constant thing to do or is it just once a week or so? oh yeah, one more thing, what is the best way to make the dripping thing?
