Phyto starter - Will dts work?

[Can you start growing phyto from DT's Phytoplankton that you get at the LFS?
or will it only work if you get some from another club member?]

[Make sure you check to see what type of plankton it has. I thought the newest DT's was a mixture of planktons. If this is the case, it may not work because the planktons will kill each other off. What I did when I first started mine was buy some from someone on ebay. There are several folks who do their own in the club that might have some extra to give you to get you started.]

[We ought to have a "pinned" article about how to "raise" phyto. Would be good for all members to know! Let's see what we can do about that, eh?]

[I have used both the 3 different type DTs and the others with no issues.

I'm sure as Jody suggests that in the 3 variant version one becomes dominent and kills/chokes out the other but I have seen no ill effects from this and the cultures turn just as dark and do not smell or effect anything negativly.]

[I've heard the same arguments about DT's but I have used it as well as various other cultures from local members and Florida Aqua Farms to start numerous batches of phyto.
Although I own a microscope I can't say that I have ever actually tried to compare one of my DT cultures (after a few weeks) to the originally supplied DT from the bottle. Maybe a little science experiment when I get some free time.]

[Thanks Keith.

We have had a few threads in our DIY forum on Phytoplankton culturing, and the SEARCH button would find those easily enough.

Rather than pinning topics, I think we need a small library page. Maybe a forum with a link to each topic, that is READ-ONLY to avoid clutter.]
