Phyto Question

Stopped by the LFS yesterday and picked up a new bottle of DTs. Got home shook it opened it, smelled it, WOW! Smelled like raw sewage. Is it good or spoiled?
 
sewege smell bad really bad. take it back and ask them to replace it. hopefully they will.

I know mine last about a month give or take a week or two. sometime 5 wks. but I buy mine off the boards and keep mine in the fridge and rotate every so often.
 
BTW - Heard yesterday that DT is not going to carry the Green bottles any more. They have upgraded to the new reef mix that has 3 types of algae.

For those of you that are bubbling yours, how long? And, how long can you let it bubble before splitting?

I guess I could always spit and sell like some other do. But if I can just let it bubble away then cool.
 
What does Phyto do to your corals? do i really need it? how often? what is the best Phyto products out there in the market? thanks a bunch.
 
Steve, mine bubbles for 2 to 4 weeks before I bother splitting it. It is crash-proof. :)

Rocky, phytoplankton is food on a plankton-size scale. I guess the main thing I want to fed are copepods, so that my fish can eat those pods. So phyto feeds the pods, the pods become food, and the fish are fatter. Some corals do consume phyto. It is important not to overdose the system though.
 
i bought a frozen phytoplankon at the local fish store, is that the same thing? How do you get pods? My tank doesnt have any pods. Where do i buy some pods?
