Phosphate in Fish Food

Is there some kind of chart out there that shows how much phosphate is in the individual fish foods? I'm just wondering because I know frozen foods have phosphates in the preservatives and I wanted to compare it against flakes, pellets, and etc. :D

I guess just don't use flake foods... They always make your fingers smell like fish food for a long time after anyways. My fish are happy with omnivore frozen cubes and other such treats.

Randy Holmes pointed out a study from a while back and thought you guys would like to see it.

Ive been debating on getting my food tested for phosphates...

I have had it analyzed though and was happy to see it beats any other frozen food out there hands down on protein and moisture content. Most Frozen foods are 50-80% moisture, some even 90%.

Heres the details if anyones wondering what they are feeding to thier tanks when they use my food.

Coral & Fish Food

Crude Protein (min.) 30%
Crude Fat (min.) 15%
Crude Fiber (max.) .5%
Moisture (min.) 40%

Protein is what is most important in your food. As is moisture, you dont want to be spending your dollars on water..

Phosphates arent widely tested though it is possible.

We had some problems recently with phosphate so I tested the phosphate in the water my food thaws in. The phosphate was way off the chart. I tested it again after rinsing the food a couple of times and it was still way off the chart. So now I strain the food through a net and add it to the tank this way. The food I was testing was PE mysis.

Why do you strain the food if both strained and unstrained tested high?

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well. Since I detected phoshate in the water before and after I rinsed the food I decided I did not want to add any water to the tank that the food was sitting in. So I pour the food into a small net and rinse it and then put the net directly into the tank. I don't know if this helps much but I feed a lot of food since I have so many fish.

I thaw and drain frozen foods for my reefs but just dump the water in for my FOWLR.

Never sure how much it helped, just made me feel better. :D

PE still has a ton of phospahte in it (as do almost all foods). I always thaw and strain. Test the thawed wated next time Matt. I know there is still phosphate in the food but the more I can keep contained in the food and therefore getting into the fish rather then the water column better. I actually tested the water one time from thawing PE and it was over 100ppm phosphates.

I thaw and strain everything.
