Phosban reactor ??? do i have to have one

is it that beneficial to have a phosban reactor, or putting the media into a mesh bag and attaching to the drain pipe to sump be just as good.

I am asking as i am starting to battle cyano, no diatom or gha though. I think that this cyano started when i started dosing too much garlic and even though i have lessened the garlic to the point of almost none the cyano comes back. I have a fuge that i just had to trim full of cheato

also is the kent phosphate sponge any good or should i be looking at phosban or rowaphos??

the reactor is not needed - but it does alow for more water to media surface contact. It's design agitates, and suspends the media as the water flows around it. A filter bag will also work, it just wont be as effective.

I just added two last week. One is Phosban and one is carbon.

Great product and easy to work with. The top connections allow for easy maintenance of media and cleaning. It's also reassuring to watch through the clear housing. Since the media is in suspension, you know it's getting good flow through vs. just going over and around it.

My phosphates were a little high too, but I haven't checked since installation. I figured I'd give it a week...so, I'll look at the levels this weekend.

If you cant afford to buy one... there is a thread somewhere in the forums that will show you how to make one from a 12 onze plastic coke bottle.

Oh yea, I forgot about that one....it's actually Gatorade though.

If your in a pinch for a quick fix, this would work. But I really liked the way the phosban reactors have the plumbing configured with rubber. I'm sure the phosbans would be easier to maintain in the long run.

But then again, with the Gatorade bottles, cleaning could be as easy as treating yourself to a cold drink, tossing the old bottle (and old media), and using your new empty for a replacement.

I really like the Phosban reactor as well. It does a great job of reducing PO4 and when it's time to change the media, I just pop the hoses off and carry the whole thing to the garage. Money well spent in my opinion.

Ya I agree they are worth the $30. The original ones weren't as they still had thumbscrews, non-adjustbale plumbing, etc. but these new ones are very very nice.
