Phophate Reactors

Hi,

I have been battling green hair algae for a long time and am seriously thinking about adding a phosphate reactor. This is a new realm for me... and I am looking for any information I can get on them. It's really frustrating.. having the GHA problem. All my parameters are in check...

PH 8.4
Salinity 1.025
Ammo 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
Cal 420
Temp 78

Okay. . well. . what's your phosphate test say? I was going to add a DIY phosphate reactor not to long ago, tested for phosphates and got .25. Apparently, I didn't need one. I just needed to get rid of the GHA and it would go away.

If you turn off the lights for 48 hours it should die. Your corals will probably hate you though. Less light helps too 6 hrs a day, and hand pick it off every. . .day. . .every. . day. I hated it, but when the AC went out here and I turned the lights off for about 48 hours I turned them back on and. . no GHA. Although the temp went up really hot too. *Something* killed it mostly all back. Now the blenny nibbles on anything still barely visable. For the first time ever I can see this rock that used to be my GHA rock.

A phosban reactor is what most people use, which really isn't that expensive online. $35 for the unit, a tiny powerhead and some media is all you need. You can hang it on the tank, put it in the sump, hang it off the sump... I use the reactor to run carbon as well. I have three of them actually.

There are different brands of phosphate removers. I talk about them on this page: http://www.melevsreef.com/chemicals.html

Ya it's hard to DIY cheaper honestly! Also any reading is bad. If you have a hint of phosphate that many times will fuel hair algea to at a minimum keep what is already there growing.
