Periwinkle Snails?

I was just at my local Asian Food Market and I noticed a large tank full of snails being sold as Periwinkle. I've done a bit of poking around and see that there are several retailers on eBay selling them as safe for reef tanks, but not much more information. I know a snail is hard to identify, but has anybody used periwinkle snails in their tank? These things are about $3.99 a lb!

No idea... you'd need a species name I think. Some snails are fine while others in the same family are not. I'd also be a bit concerned about temps. Are they from a tropical region or cold water?

I don't imagine that's a question I'd be able to get an answer to. I'm thinking about getting a handful and dropping them into my fuge.

I tried the same with small abalone from H-mart, with a slooooooow acclimation, but it died within a week (the water in the store was _very_ cold).

The guy at the Asian market gave me some to try, they didn't last long as they are cold water species. I think he said they kept their water in the mid 50's.

I bought a pound, but lost about 95% of them as their water was very cold also. I have several that survived in the refugium and a few in the display. For the most part, it was a big, stinky failure.
