Percula Ocellaris does it matter

In July I bought a pair of Percula Clownfish. I'm pretty sure they are true percs based on how they look and also the price $75 for the pair. During the summer one of the clowns died. I have been waiting for the remaining clownfish to get bigger so I can purchase a smaller one to have a pair again.

I'm assuming that the one I have is changing to female so I want to make sure I get a smaller one to be the male.

The problem I'm having is that my clownfish I have right now is only about 1.5" long. I have been to about 5 different stores the past week and all of the True Percs they have are either 1.5" long or longer.

My question is. If I purchase an Ocellaris will they pair up okay or is it best to wait until my existing clown gets bigger.

True percs are Amphiprion percula. False are Amphiprion ocellaris.

You can see the differences here:

It really does not matter if you wait for the survivor to get larger. The pair will decide what to do when they choose to pair up.

have you been to DNA? They usally have a tank full of Tank raised TP, and they are usally small.

I'm pretty sure what DNA has are Ocellaris. If you are talking about one of the tanks they have in the middle of the fish room that is alway full of clowns, I would never buy any of them. Their colors are alway very pale from what I expect a clownfish to look like.

I was at petland yesterday and their fish manager said she could order some small tank raised percs so hopefully she will get some soon.

I have 2 from the middle tanks. They where sold as tank Raised TP. Actully my first fish still have him today. Both my Clowns have excellent color, vivid orange and white and nice black markings. The male has been in 3 tank upgrades, he started in a 7 gallon went to a 29g and then i got a second and now they are both in my 180g.

A true perc and a false perc will pair up. The size is what matters. If you have only one it will eventually become female as it grows. This has been my experience.
