Penguin Powerhead 1140 Flow Rate

Ok, I've tried to position this darn power head every way I can to slow down the flow. It's rated at 350gph, but it's just one powerful son of a twitch!
Is there any possible remedy (besides buying a new pwh)? I've considered a Hydor Deflector, trimming the impeller, pre sponge filter, etc. I need some expertise.
Yeah I could buy a slower pwh, but I'm all about making what I have- make it work!
Fyi, it's in a 29 gallon long reef, with sps, and a hob diy refugium, aquaclear filter, and koralia 425 pwh. I have good flow already but the Penguin 1140 is just a bit too much. Help me slow this bas-turd down. Please.
(I've been turning it off at night so my poor cute little Perculas can get some rest)
p.s I've had this pwh for three years now and it's still going strong so I want to make it work! Lol

Do you have a controller or a timer? You could try setting it on a rotating schedule of 5 minutes on 10 minutes off or something along those lines. Won't help lessen the power of the PH but it will at least give some randomness to the water movement as well as increase the overall intensity.

If that's not an option I would put on a pre-sponge filter as that will help reduce the water moving in to the powerhead and if one isn't enough, stack a second one on it. Not ideal and will need to be cleaned rather regularly, but it's an option.

You could also set it lower in the tank and aim it towards the water surface as opposed to across the tank. This will help reduce the direct flow on coral / fish / etc, increase gaseous exchange and won't be completely useless as it'll still create indirect flow.

Or you could just do a combination of all of the above.

Thanks for your response.
No I don't have a controller but I do have a timer. Never thought of that.
I also read about the pre filter sponge. Gonna have to try that out. I clean my tank once a week anyway so maintenance isn't a problem.
I already have it aimed at the surface but this booger moves alot of water and still creating turbulence. I'll try the above mentioned suggestions. Thanks again!
