Pc lights and water - Do they mix?

[Any one use PC lights over an open tank? I just got a new Hamilton retrofit and they say to always use a lens or glass top. The bottom of the lights are 4" or so off the water and I really don't want to equip just that section with a cover.

Are they just trying to sell more stuff or alleviate liability? Is there really a big concern?]

[I've got the same lights, and they told me the same thing. However that heats your tank.

What they want to make is that your sockets don't get wet. And they will when a fish splashes. If you had water proof endcaps it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Another thing happens in the winter... my tank gets tons of condensation in the canopy at night, as my house is 69 and my tank is 79. They wanted me to install a vent fan, but I've got no room.]

[Well, I run PC's on three tanks. I think the main problem is the extra moisture will shorten the life of the bulbs, and reflector. No aquarium lights are good in water. Disclaimer (do as I say not as I do) No Warranty is implied or expressed!!]

[Ok..so I get that it is done with no deaths or dismemberments occuring. That after all IS the important thing. I can live with the shorter bulb life with no lens or glass over the top.

Thanks guys!]
