Partial tank nuke

I returned home from work lastnight to a horrible scene. 3 of my fish were on the bottom, with only 2 moving (the clown Goby was zipping around like nothing was wrong), and every single coral was closed up. My father, whom lives with me, had come in from outside and seen my Clown Goby high on teh galss sideways, and was a fraid that he was dead. So he poked him. And, when he drifted downwards rather than swimming away, he stuck his whole hand in the tanks to poke him again. The fish then swam off perfectly fine.

Problem was, he had been working outside with ant poison and weed killer, and hadn't washed his hands...

I lost my Flame Angel, all of my scarlet hermits, most of my small snails (though not any of the BIG ones), my pom-pom (less) crab and emerald crab, and a group of Zoas has not yet reopenned. I was lucky that I had about 20 gallons of water that I had just mixed up sitting around, but I had to fill the bathtub with hot water around the buckets to warm it all up, as my extra heater is in the tank in my daughters classroom.

I grabbed the fish, put them in 5 gal, changed out 15 more gallons, then removed some of the rock to get at the dead snails and crabs. This allowed me to do a little scrubbing of the rocks, but in trying to put it all back I dropped a piece onto some Xenia. It looks ok...

I also changed out the charcoal and phosfree lastnighit and this morning, as well as rinsing the Cheatomorpha in my sump.

As of this morning, everything seems ok. Only that one small patch of Zoas hasn't reopenned, and the 3 remaining fish all seem fine and are eating. The crushed Xenia is open, but not all of the way. Oddly, the Urchin doesn't seem phased at all.

I'll be changing out 5 more gal tonight. Is there anything further I should I should be on the look out for or should do?

I think you've pretty much done it. I'd suggest getting an extra heater for mixing saltwater since we are now in the winter season.

Maybe your father could use a tool next time, like a long handled glass scraper to keep his hands out of the tank. Sorry that happened to you.

Thanks guys. I'll get some poly tonight just to be safe.

That was one of the things that ticked me most; I have 2 acylic "pokers" right there that he could have used, and he knows to wash his hands. It was just a "senior moment", but those are the kinds of slips that lead to disaster.

Man, rough weekend. First the Sea Hare, then this...
