Pally's losing skirts HELP!

In one week the skirts are disappearing from one set of pallys I have. I have never seen any of my fish pick on any corals in the tank. I have not seen any spiders that could be the culprit. Parms are good less than 5 trates and 0 ammonium, dkh 9-10, mag 1350-1400, calc 440, PH 8.0, temp 80+- 1, PO4 near 0. Tangs regal and kole, wrasse's xmas mystery yellow, royal gramma, chromis, anthias, and long nose hawk fish.

thx for suggestions
Henry

Hippo tang.. or the kole, but my guess would be the hippo.

By chance did you notice your palys poopin (stringy brown stuff) over the last few days? There is a theory tangs develop a taste for the poo, then go after the palys.

I haven't seen any pally poop, and It's hard to believe the Hippo tang is eating them because I have never seen that characteristic/potential YET.

thx

The other common culprits would be large tiger pods and mithrax (emerald) crabs.

Remember the Purple Tang I had? He at them, skirts first then bodies and even started nipping on my acans.

Sundials suck the juice out, spiders eat from the inside out (looks like they burst) and nudis consume the entire thing. Skirts are usually nipper eaters, tangs, rabbit fish, crabs that kind of thing.

Arrg! That majority rules thing is killing me. I would hate to get rid of Blue he was the third fish in the tank over a year old now.

OK that was good track records and good to know that spiders eat from inside out I was worried about the critters you can't easily see.

Wow get rid of Blue, MAN.

thks david

I have a big mathrix crab that developed a taste for zoos:( He prefers the pretty ones. It took me a while to figure out who the guilty party was.

Geez I do have a mathrix crab who is only out during the late night. Thats got to be it because I'm not seeing the offender. I going crabin tonight.

thx Mary

No problemo... start with the emerald first, then move on from there. Watch the tank in the morning and early evening towards lights out, thats when mine seemed to do it more. If you see them close up during the day, set up shop away from the tank and watch, thats a sign something is bothering them.

I know what you mean, the hippos are beautiful fish, as was that Purple Tang I had, not to mention he ate bubble aglae in the nooks and crannies the sohal can't get to. But I like my acans and palys more so he had to go :)

Glad to see you got your Mg up too... are you noticing a difference in those montis we talked about when I was over?

You know I'm trying to do everthing but think of removing Blue.

The MG is up and I noticed more color less browning moving the monti's a little lower in the tank also I turn my adjustable ballast down to 200 to 225 watts from full blast. That also helps keep the temps right at 80.

I know how you feel about the blue tang. I have one in my fuge right now that was taking bites out of my lps and clams. She is so pretty that I hate to get rid of her but she was BAD! She was eating my clams right in front of me. It took me 2 weeks to catch her and she killed a maxima and a crocea before I caught her:( She will be going to a new home that has no lps and clams.

More cases of bad blue tangs!

I've had mine for almost 1-1/2 yrs. now. (Knock on wood) I've had no problems yet.
I think well fed a wide variety helps. In a given week my tangs will eat Formula Two flakes, Prime Reef flakes, red and green dried algae, 2 or 3 different live/fresh macros, Laguna Farms or equiv. frozen food, mini-mysis, bits of silversides, bits of krill, and which-ever freeze-dried zooplankton I have ATM. As soon as Frank gets the Reef Nutrition products in they will start getting some arcti-pods too.
