Pakmix playsand

Anyone had any experience with this, I read that its aragonite and does just fine in reef tanks. Im in bad need of a sand replacement as I have found mine to be way to coarse, more like a large flake rather than a grain, I think its turned into nothing more than a trap for sediment and organics.

Link please? Do you know of anyone that has used it yet to read their experience?

I have several links here, one is kind of a downer but the first link is several years old. The spec sheet on the sand says contains free silica but I have no idea how much it contains.

It says they sell it at the home depot in cedar hill, and it just so happens I have to buy some stuff to repair a toilet and a new ceiling fan, so I will pick up a bag if I can find it and do the vinigar test on it tonight. At 3.45 a 50lb bag, im not loosing much if its not.

No such luck. Cedar hill only hand one brand of play sand that I know for a fact to be silicate based. I have to go to the waxahachie store tomorrow, so I will check at that one as well.

Been reading up on this, and went straight to their website. Under the MSDS, it says the product contains silica, dunno if thats something we would really want in our tanks.

right, thats what I was saying, question being how much silica or has the product changed and whether it would cause as much of an issue as what im dealing with at the moment, as of right now im having the beginning of a Dinoflagellette bloom again, just went through this and thought I licked em and am now seeing great results in growth from my corals, Dinos were gone for about a month with no sign of it in the tank.

thought this was interesting http://www.reefs.org/library/article/r_toonen9.html and also http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2003/1/aafeature1

Well, I have been doing some quick reading and im now gathering that silica sand is fine in our reef tanks and that people actually dose silicates into their tanks for feeding purposes, Snails, sponges and mullosks, but that silica sand wont generally raise silicates in your tank to that high of a level, the most important thing seems to be the size of the actual sand. The obvious down side here would be the aragonite sand being used to help buffer parameters in the tank?

Do you have a picture of the sand you currently have? My little team of nassarius snails go to work, and work for a while, on cleaning up the left overs after feeding. Honestly some of the most useful snails I have ever had.

Just make sure it isn't play ground sand

You really want a calcium carbonate based sand as it will buffer your tank

well, its always dirty and clumpy, I siphoned some out with a cleaner nozzle and there was an awful lot of brown crap down in there, maybe im having an issue with flow being too low? Or possibly that its an enclosed system with no sump?

Crushed coral you need to siphon it every time you do a water change that will keep it clean
