Overflow Noise

My tank has been setup for a year and just recently my overflow started making a waterfall sound. It has been quiet for a year and all of the sudden it started to make noise. For some reason, this has gotten me worried about a flooding in the near future. Should I be concerned? What could be the cause? Is this something I need to take action on immediately? Thanks in advance.

I cleaned the hole on top of the durso with a q-tip but it is still making a waterfall noise. Any other suggestions? My main concern is overflowing/flooding. I'm frequently in and out of town more now than ever. Should this be of any concern? Thanks.

If you've changed nothing at all, not even the food type you use, then check the Durso. A q-tip usually isn't stiff enough to remove saltcreep. You can use a tooth pick, or even a drill bit that matches the size of the orifice.

Okay. Found the problem. The return on the overflow has a hole in the pipe. Water drips out of the hole and splashes onto the water in the overflow. Any suggestions on how to quiet this down?

That is a siphon break hole on your return line. You don't want to close that up. It prevents water from coming back down from the return lines.

I had the same waterfall noise as you and I ended up raising my durso pipes up until my water level slightly covered the siphon break hole.

I'm confused how this would have suddenly happened, without a change happening. The level in the overflow would have had to decrease seems like, if the durso hole is fully cleaned out then a weak return pump could cause this. Have you tried cleaning/inspecting the impeller?

Cheers,
