Out-of-sump Skimmers?

Are there out-of-sump skimmers (not HOT)? I've about HAD IT with messing with the pump to my skimmer. I love the skimmer, but the pump won't restart (except in the kitchen sink) and would love to not have to kill my back, neck and arms trying to get the darn thing in and out of the sump, only to have it not work.

there are many that are out of sump, many can actually be either in or out. i have a das ex2 which i know several others have and it can be ran in or out. friend has the das ex1 ran externally and it works well for him. space will really be the determining factor, how much room would you have for one?

I ran an ETSS 600 out of sump on my old system before the center brace on the tank broke. I know downdraft isnt the "in thing" at the moment, but they do a great job. I just bought a new ETSS for my new tank and am quite happy with it so far.

i would put together a list of skimmers who have a footprint that will fit in your available space and then go from there. do a quick comparison on them, post here, and then see where that gets you. no point finding a skimmer you like and it not fitting.

i love my octopus recirculating skimmer. i have had the 150 model and just upgraded to the 200 model.

what kind of skimmer is it? what kind of pump? You may be able to swamp it out for something different that is more reliable.

I wouldn't recommend an out of tank over an in sump, so if you do buy a new one, look at one of the better in sump models. Most of them have good reliable pumps like sedras or eheims.
