Opinions wanted on setup

[I have a 60 gallon GlassCages tank that I'm setting up soon (finished by weds off next week).

I have a mag 1200 and a mag 9.5 available for the return and one 900 and two 1200 MJ's available. 29 gallon sump.
I have more overflow than this tank needs, but hey, it was cheap.

I'm looking for ideas on how to plumb the return for maximum flow and minimum powerheads. Any suggestions? I will be coming through the bulkhead with 1" pipe. Keep in mind that this tank is 2:3 height to width.

How would YOU do it?

[Tony,

A couple of ideas for you to consider.

1. A Sea Swirl. This would allow the return from the sump, via the mag 1200 to be random.
2. Instead of a Sea Swirl, you could plumb in a SQWD inside the overflow chamber with the output to some locline over the overflow box.
3. Build a closed loop using a SQWD or not. The closed loop can be like the one Marc had on his old tanks with the intake pipe coming over the top of the tank but still in the overflow.

With either of these options, you could use the MJs where you have some dead spots.

Hope this helps.]

[Get one of these and be done with it.

Use your Mag 12 plumb 4 return to your tank from the outputs and divert what you need to back into the sump because the 12 will produce more than your bulkhead drain can handle (probably get about 400GPH with a Durso 8x turnover)!

If it's going to be an SPS tank you may want to use the 9.5 for the return and the 12 on a closed loop with this device. That would give you upwards of 25 times turnover.

No powerheads and potentially only one pump.

If you don't have the $125 to spend.

I would run the Mag 9.5 as the return pump (It will put out all one bulkhead can drain) and put the 12 on a closed loop with a SCWD. I probably still go with 4 outlets on the scwd or that flow will probably be to intense. Still no powerheads which is ideal! If you don't need that much flow just run the Mag 9.5 up through a scwd for the return and you are done. Probably be a pretty close match with the drain at that point.]

[No sps for this tank
2" durso on the 1.5" drain
Hoping for a single pump solution and the OM might be the only one.
If I go with a distributed solution, I won't necessarily have to use the return bulkhead which will give me another 1" drain.]

[The Mag 12 with the Ocean motion and having both holes in the bulkheads as drains would work great.

Will you have room to put 2 dursos in the overflow?

You could run the 12 to a SCWD and then have it split on each side of the SCWD and 2 would be on at one time. Nothing wrong with that. The ocean motion would give you more flow but it's also $100 more so I'm not sure it's worth it.

Either way though if possible I would use both bulkhead holes for drains.]

[Update:
I have a Mag 9.5 on the return. The locline exit is a flat nozzle 1.5" wide. I have a Maxijet 1200 in the back right corner hanging on the glass, no suction cups. The two of them together are providing what I would call ideal current right now. Adding my first rock to it tonight. Will detail the build with pictures tonight. Went to take them last night and camera batteries died.

Getting that new tank sand smoke to go away is tough without LR. The remora pro can't be adjusted low enough to pull wet foam with dust and i have no organics in the system yet.]

[Looking forward to seeing this thread updated.
