Open Brain Question

I bought an open brain a week or so ago. I was told to put it on the rock about midway up on my tank and it should open up for me. I did that and it didn't work. Then I thought it wasn't getting enough light so I raised it with still no success. Then I recently read that open brains are used to being on the sandbed. Now, I'm thinking maybe it should be on the sandbed and not on the rocks. Any suggestions?

I have mine on the rocks at the top of the tank. Seems to open up more there. Did start it off in the sand bed but moved it up due to my hammer trying to attack it.
 
I too have mine on rocks, and it opened up larger. I have mine at the top of the tank with medium flow.
