OMG...Pretty Cool !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is pretty exciting for me. I knew my Cardinals were spawning and the male was caring for the brood, but today I was actually able to save 1 of the babies !! Pretty crazy. This little guy made it through predation, high flow, pumps, ect. Pretty exciting for a newby like me. here's a pic of the little guy [smilie=wink.gif] .I put him in my fuge. Will this little guy eat baby brine? Is there something else I can give him to try and see him through?

grats, thats very cool! mine have only held once and i unfortunately didnt get to them in time. baby brine will work but you need to start making some soon

That's really cool, congrats. Not sure on the brine, but worth a shot, right? I'd try to get him to eat anything you can to keep him alive.

Wes, this pair has held on other ocassions, but I'm just not knowledgeable enough to time it for when they are released, plus it's probably hard to get them to mature. I guess they mostly all get eaten or killed by the pumps oveflow, ect. I was happy to be able to pull this one out. I'm going to read up on this and see if I can be more successful at getting more next time.

They will eat bbs, and will accept food as soon as they are released from the males brood.

Get yourself a black longspine urchin. You also want to get a fuge type lite to put over the main tank. The male will go right towards the urchin and as it carries babies, it will really hang around it. It will also spit the babies into the urchin when ready. Leave the fuge light on the main tank all the time. That way the babies will be able to see the urchin and stay with it. If not they will swim away and get lost. You can try feeding frozen baby brine and some will take to it, but others will refuse. The main thing is to feed the constantly. If you can catch the all out and transfer them into a small tank that's plumbed into the main system, that's even better.
Hope this helps

Yep. If the male mouth broods them as long as he should (roughly 21 days), it should take freshly hatched baby brine shrimp right off. Feed it three or four times a day if you can, because it can't go 24 hours between meals and get the nutrition it needs. You can probably start weaning it onto frozen and flake/pellet in about a week.

Congratulations, and good luck!

Theyre actually pretty good swimmers from the time they are released completely, because he usually spits them out and sucks them back in for a day or two. From my brief experience with them, as long as they can see the urchin, they'll stay pretty close to it, but if the light goes out they disperse quickly. The best way to catch them is to raise the urchin slowly with a spagetti scoop, and then drop it towards the bottom. After it falls, the will try to swim down towards it, and you can scoop them with a net.

Not an expert, but rather new to this. All I can say on the matter is to get a pair and wait for them to pair up . I was simply lucky. Having good water quality probably is a must (finally got that going), and a few moonlights probably can't hurt. I believe they help with spawning. On a side note, I just realized them male has more fry in his mouth. The one I caught yesterday, probably escaped. I tried netting the male so I could put him in the sump untill realease, but it was not possible. I'll keep an eye on him and hope to catch the rest of the fry. I'm going to try and find a long spine urchin as Drew suggested to better my odds. Will the urchin be totally Reef safe?

The urchins are about 95% reef safe. The only thing they do is knock some stuff over and grind algae off the rocks. If you have coralline covered rocks, they will often grind it off to, but they don't hurt corals or anything like that.

Congrats! It really cool how they look like a miniature version of the adults right away. I have noticed that my maroon clownfish pair spawn like clockwork when the water is great and when they're fed good quality frozen food. You might also try frozen baby brine if you don't have live BBS. Hope the little guy makes it!

Since urchins can strip coraline off of a rock, will the mar the glass too? Or do they pretty much stay off the glass?

They can climb up the glass and silicone but I've never seen them do any damage to it.

Well, I'm happy to say... I saved the whole brood !! 30 or 32 in total (hard to count them, they're very active). I hope at least half make it. Here's a pic of them. If someone has tips for keeping them alive. I'm all ears.... I mean eyes [smilie=rofl.gif] .

Funny how a thread about a club member breading Bangai Cardinals right as I am in the market for captive breed Bangai Cardinals.

Heathd, If they mature and you can pic them up.....you can have a couple. Only problem is...............I'm not exactly around the corner [smilie=smile.gif] .
