Old Live Sand

i picked up a tank today that came with live sand.. although im not using the tank for sw so i was thinking to add the sand in my sump.. thing is the sand is pretty old.. and is in a bag with bit of water to keep it wet.. the sand smells terrible.. is this normal for established sand? would it be safe going into my sump to help cycle my new tank?

sand is beneficial because it is undistrurbed, when you scoop it out to add it then you will get a bunch of junk you dont want. if you want to use it, then take a cup or two and rinse the rest clean before adding it.

and because there are lots of i think i nuked my tank threads that people tried to reuse sand

If the sandbed is over six months old, it is best to rinse it clean and start fresh. I've got an article on my site about how. If you like, I can PM you the link.

Agree with Marc, I used his advise and the sand came very clean, In my opinion its best to do a lil extra work and avoid any potential problems in the future, or immediate present disaster lol. Good luck
