Okay, here it is. The 75g NextWave door-prize build.

I'm aiming for predominately SPS & clams though will probably slip my Lobophyllia in there too.

Nothing is set-up yet. Below is a list of equipment I have gathered so far.

  • Perfecto 75g RR tank w/Durso standpipe
    30g sump/refugium w/QuietOne 3000 return
    2x Koralia #3's (850gph ea.)
2x Reef Optix III Plus HQI pendants w/XM 15,000k DE bulbs
    Sunlight Supply-Galaxy 2x 250w electronic ballast
    2x 24w HO T5 (48w) for fuge
AquaController jr. with serial port, Temp/pH probes, & DC8
    Finnex 300w titanium tube-only heater
    1 x 4 fan unit & 1 x 2 fan unit (1 for tank, 1 for fuge)

I haven't decided on a heater yet so any input there will be appreciated. I've had good luck with the Won Bros. titaniums. I'm going to try using fans to keep the tank from overheating. Those cool 3 or 4 fan clamp on the tank set-ups.

I would like some input on sand in the display. I'm planning on using the Pavestone pulverized limestone. I like the look of a DSB (critter tunnels etc.) so that is not a determining factor but would like to hear other factors involved in a DSB or SSB in an SPS tank. I really don't care to have it bare bottom.
Anything else you think of I haven't mentioned please input.
Thanx in advance,

List looks good. Where are you planning to get your fans? I've been looking to get some like that but have only found them at docfosters. As for sandbeds, I don't run them because I like heavier flow than one would allow. You might think about flow needs if you are going to have lots of sps.

Drs. Foster & Smith. There are some on Ebay. They're the same price but shipping is more.

Oh yeah, I forgot to put in I've got a Coralife Super Skimmer 65.

Subscribing. Looking forward to seeing this thread update. Be sure to post pictures, because.....

Until today I haven't really been doing anything but collecting.
Ahhh but today.... I cut holes in the top of my canopy  (JK) for the MH pendants to sit over. I'm going to install some nicely mitered 1/4 round around the holes to hold the lights in place and then paint black to match. I also got the acrylic cut and glued and siliconed in place for the bubble trap side of the fuge. I'll do the return side piece tomorrow then post pics of my progress.

Mike with the ac controller, you can use one of the finnex heating tubes only if you choose. The controller will handle the on and off part.

Looks good! Keep up the great work! In time it will look great! Looks as if your working very hard on this project!

Nothing like a new setup, looks good.

Only thing I noticed is once you start adding more sps/clams you'll want to find a better bulb for those DE fixtures, those 15k XM's seem specifically designed to have phenomenally low PAR. And by low, I mean one 48" 54W T5 12k puts out the same PAR as one 250k XM 15k at 18".

Keep updating to, like to see how it goes!

:? It may as well be in german. What is PPFD & CCT? I can't seem to find anything on that site that explains that. Also, it doesn't list my ballast nor could I find anything on T5's there. :?

The Sunlight Supply ballastas are Bluewave's.

If you visit Reefcentral alot you can get alot of T5 info off GrimReefer, he's constantly posting his tests of blubs, fixtures, reflectors, the works he's the t5 expert. He mimics the same setup Sanjay uses so you can coorelate somewhat.

-PPFD is Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density, bascially PAR
-CCT is Correlated Color Temperature. 10,000 is white, if he lists 0 it's a blue-bulb that exceeds 20,000.

looking good Mike, how large is your return section in that sump and, out of curiosity, why didn't you use retrofits in the canopy?

how large is your return section said:
10" x 12". I'm going to experiment with it and if it's not big enough I've got room to add a 10g tank that I'll plumb in to be my return section. I've also got an auto top-off set up for it.
why didn't you use retrofits in the canopy said:
I wanted as much heat as possible outside the canopy.
Be sure and seal the edges where you cut into the canopy said:
I'm cutting 1/2" 1/4 round to "frame in" the pendants to hold them in place. When I get them on today I'm going to prime and paint black to match.

If you dont mind me asking how much was that canopy. I have the same one in light oak for 238... i thought that was pretty pricey. was urs around the same?

Mike, you may want to add three braces to the baffle with the teeth/return side, 2 on the side & 1 in the bottem middle, seeing it will be the one holding all the water weight. It must be durable.

Good move on the lights. If you mounted them inside, there would be a great deal of heat buildup. Not only that but it would give you zero access from the front, i.e. hot as heck MH bulbs.

If you need any extra help, Im right accross the freewayJLMK, take care man.
