Ok getting an oceanic(aga) 140

[Getting an Oceanic 140 RR any helpful tips or ideas? I thinking a mag 24 will be the pump to go with. I was thinking of splitting the return of each overflow with a wye in the locline so that there would be a total number of 4 outlets for return. I was really torn between the 150 rr which is 6'x18"x29 and this tank which is 4'x2'x29". My wife likes the the wide being only 18" so it doesn't stick out from wall much. But I like the 2' depth for more aquascaping options. I like the 6' tank but have a nice fairly new 4' aqualight pro fixture. It was a very tough decision but I ended up going for the 140. I have a 90 bowfront now that is the same height of 29", will the 150 hqi that I use now be good enough for the 29" tall and 2' wide? There was plenty enough light in the 90 but it was only from 12.5" on the sides to 18" in the middle. I was smart enought to buy a skimmer that was rated for 150 gallons for my 90 that I can now use on my 140. Also the sump I had built will work great still too. Now I just have to sell my 90 gal bowfront. Any ideas on how much it is worth being less than a year old?]

[I would not put that much flow through my sump for sure. Not saying it can be done but can lead to microbubble issues among others. I would buy a Mag 9.5 or even 7 and then do the 24 close loop. Then your talking. Enough flow for anything you want to keep!

The lighting should be OK. It's really just a planning issue. No acros on the bottom corners, stuff like that!

And remember all these are purely suggestions. There are a million ways to set it up "right".]

[Chris,
I think that you'd be hard pressed to get 2400 gph through the megaflow overflows unless you widen the teeth. I think I remember those overflows are rated at 600gph each, with a 1" bulkhead. If yours has bigger bulkheads, then you might be able to get more flow through them.

I agree w/ Keith though. I just bought a 120 Oceanic and I'm thinking about removing some of the teeth from the overflows and then running a mag 18 in the sump. I might have to throttle back the pump a little.

[If that tank is dual overflows to the outside I have that exact tank.

I had a mag 2400 on the system for a year and a half had all sorts of problems. Marc finally in griping at me with the wife there got me to downgrade to a mag 1200.

It's much better for it!]

[As for selling the 90 gallon tank I am selling my 140 in the next few months and I think $800 to $900 is fairly reasonable. I would guess somewhere between $450 and $550. If it has tank and stand and is reef ready??? If no stand not reef ready I would guess half of that!]

[I'll pull a Marc and start planting it in your subconscious.

"CLOSED LOOP, CLOSED LOOP, CLOSED LOOP"]

[From my understanding the closed loop is something that is hanging on the back of tank and buying a reef ready tank I didn't want anything on the back.]

[Hanging on th back is just 1 way to do a closed loop. You can also drill the tank for it and have nothing hanging on the back.

Most will say a mag24 is too big (in most cases) for a return pump on that size tank. You may be able to make it work but it will be extra effort to do so. Using a Closed Loop will give you that extra amount of flow needed in the tank for the least amount of intrusiveness (IMO). If you don't want the closed loop then your are looking at multiple powerheads, tunze streams, tunze wave box or seios. This is only my opinion, but it comes from experience of putting too big a pump on the return and having problems. You can make the bigger pump work but there are other options.

There are many right ways to make it work, some just take more work than others.]

[i have a mag 12 on a 40 breeder..and its got a 1 1/2 inch stand pipe for the exit .. its barley enough to drain the water out.. I wouldnt put anything bigger than a Mag 18 on that size tank unless you split the line off to a pressure required protein skimmer and wanted a unipump system....

[So many ways to do a closed loop! If you do it right you will barely notice them. Other option to get the needed water movement would be to use either Tunze or Seio's.]
