Hello,
I started keeping marine fish in 1988 and stayed in it until 2003 when I had to transfer to the DFW area. At the time of my transfer, I had a 125 gallon fish only tank, and a 70 gallon reef tank with MH lighting. Before I moved I sold my 125 gal. tank but I kept the 70 gal. in hopes that one day I might get back into the hobby. I'm getting that itch. I don't know that I want to do a reef tank again because of the expense of the lighting. My wife and I vacationed in Maui last year and I thought I might like to do a Hawaiian fish only tank. Would it be possible to do it with a 70 gallon tank? What is the newest technology concerning filtration? I come from the time of trickle filters with rotating spray bars and shotgun wad media. I'd appreciate any suggestions you could give concerning books or websites that might get me started up again. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just a quality protein skimmer. Be prepared to pay 2-300 for a decent one. Gonna need at least 50 pounds of live rock. That's about it for filtration. It might be easier to find someone local to u and spend a couple hours talking to an experienced reefer. Most are more than willing to share their knowledge.

I'm at Coit and 121. If you like, you can come out and see my Aqueon 65. Its 36 X 18 X 24 I will show you how I have the filtration setup right now and some of the challenges with a cross braced stand that size. Send a PM.
