noisey venturi

ok, i built a diy skimmer and it skims very well. The venturi is extremley noisey though, and this tank is in living room. Any suggestions for how to quiet a venturi

p.s. this skimmer kicks but for about 60$ made out of rubbermaid containers and a mag five
mag five coutresy jaquar. thats a lot jaguar it's working great, hope the mag 7 gives you enough spray bar pressure in the seahorse tank!

On the venturi tube, insert or press in one of the Lee's wooden airstones. It must remain dry though. That will muffle it perfectly and not inhibit the venturi at all.

Hi
Did I miss the build post for the skimmer? I always like to see people build equipment for cheap that work anywhere near as good as the over price retail versions. In the old days we would fill a film canister with cotton, a bunch of small holes and insert the air tube.

thanks marc!!
i have question though. Right now i have two holes drilled in the collection cup, one i have inserted the venturi tube in and the other is the vent, after doing this the noise is no longer an issue. Do you think the airstone would be a better fix though. do you think having the venturi pull air from the collection cup be detrimental to the performance of skimmer?

to Hydro: the original build is on rc and is 52 plus pages
there is a link to it in this diy forum, search diy skimmer and you will find it, basically this guy found some rubbermaid containers that just so happen to have screw on lids that match 4" pcv adapters, so with 2 containers and some 4" pcv, a 2" riser tube and a mag 5 - you have a skimmer, probably the most trick part of the whole thing is the venturi though. Boil a 1/2" pcv tee and squeeze down the center to create a restriction, use this on the intake of the pump and attach an airline to
the top of the Tee. They actually have a comparison between this and a cs-6 euro reef in the same sump running side by side, basically identical performance in that test! both pulle dout exact same amount of skimmate

No, there is no negative to pulling air from the skimmate cup. That is exactly how my Lifereef skimmer worked, and it kept the smell down as well.

true about the LR skimmer pulling air from the collection cup. LR also claims that by pulling the moist air from the collection cup, the venturi orifice becomes "self-cleaning". I rarely pull the venturi from my LR skimmer for cleaning, so the claim is probably true.... I also do not notice any appreciable noise from the LR setup.
