Niagra Falls in Overflow

The water flowing into my overflow box sounds like Niagra Falls. Is it because my Durso is too short? How can I fix this?

Thanks!

If you have the megaoverflow kit, try raising the durso pipe up so that the water will not have to fall as far.

Yep - a taller Durso means less noise. It will also require more water in the tank.

And your pictures will not show because Yahoo needs a password to get into the picture gallery.

Thanks Kitty. I finally figured out how to get a picture inside my message.

I'm going to redo the Durso so I can raise the water level. However, the bottom of the PVC pipe is cemented into the fittings. In order to raise the Street-Ell, should I redo the entire thing (all the way down to the bulkhead) or can I just add a 1 1/4 coupling and more PVC under the T fitting?

When I redo it, I was thinking about putting a "plug" fitting on the top instead of the cap since the cap and the PVC to it take so much space.

Any problems with these ideas?

Now that you have the pictures working

Can you get more water into the overflow box? What happens if you simply add more water? (If it just goes down the durso, then the pipes need to be raised, but just the "hook" part, not the whole pipe.)

make the top of the horizontal piece of the L 1/2 inch under the incoming water line Deanne. Just redo or the center or cut it and add a spacer.
Neither of my Durso are glued together. When submerged as they are they water pressures keep them in check.

What I'm looking at looks perfectly fine. Does your cap have a small hole drilled in it (3/16") to allow the Durso to breathe?

In the future, no durso fittings are glued. You press it together and insert it in the overflow. That way it can be pulled out for modifications when necessary, or cleaned.

Yes, I have two holes drilled into the cap. I started with two tiny ones and kept enlarging the holes until the surging stopped.

I want the rushing water sound stopped but I don't want the top of the Durso higher than the edge of the tank. My fear is that a fish will jump in there (when I eventually get to add one). So, I want to be able to put egg crate over the top of the overflow box.

I cemented the connections as instructed on the dursostandpipe website. There are two connections that are held together with Teflon tape. That is why I thought maybe I could add a spacer (as chevytrks suggested) and just redo the top half.

I still have lots of the 1 1/4" PVC left. So, it's just a matter of spending a few dollars for the rest of the parts. I just wanted to find out if adding a coupling and a little more pipe would mess up the flow of the Durso somehow.

Thanks!

Deanne,
I had to redo my dursos the first time I made them. Mine were doing the same thing as yours. The water was originally falling 3 1/2" into the overflow box. That was too noisy. I made the long pipe longer and now the water falls 1 1/2" into the overflow box. This is much quieter.
BTW I have egg crate on top of my tank and it is over the overflow box. The cap on the durso does stick up higher than the overflow box. I have some black acrylic laying over the overflow box that slips down the upper pipe of the durso. Then I place the cap back on the durso. No fish has jumped into the overflows yet. This also darkened the overflow box area where I had some unwanted algea starting to grow.

I had the same problem and to quite things down I placed PVC shavings into the overflow. Just enough to breakup the water as it cascades down. Works great and no modifications are necessary.
