New wave maker setup..

Bought a squid (SCWD) today, did a little plumbing,.

have a wavemaker for the 55 gallon.

Works well, with the RIO i run from the sump, the cylce is every 5 secs. would be more with a greater flow rate. im getting around 450-500 gph

cut the tubes off my maxijets, two 600s.

i have a lot of flow now baby!

Congrats.

Now tell us what model RIO. If it is the 2100 or 2500, you need to replace it. Sorry!

Jetman,
those rio's have a very bad rep. Many a tank has been lost due to their meltdown. I had a Cap (same as Rio) and got lucky as it melted mixing make up water (it was on my skimmer... ). They will fail and release strong, oily toxins into the water. Go with a Mag.

Well what does everybody suggest? im trying to at least keep my turnover rate >10, on a 55 gal, im looking at 500-600 gph, with 6 ft head

you can get a mag 7. They are suggesting you replace the rio because they have a tendancy to meltdown in your tank and killing everything. There are some threads on RC about this.

here is a link to a page with some info on this site and the name of the thread on RC.

I know it is tough to hear that what you have is no good. But trust the people here. THey know what they are talking about. I would hate to read a thread from you in 2 more weeks or months that states: Rio Melted - Tank Gone.

I would suggets a Mag 9.5 for a replacement with 6ft of head and then the 20% or so loss from the SQWD you will be at your targeted 500-600GPH.

The Rio is a time bomb man. I know that is hard to hear about a new pump but just go to RC and search. There are many many that have malfunctioned and caused massive carnage! They are really terrible pumps!

The reason I asked which model you had is because statistically, the 2100 and 2500 are the ones that will nuke a tank. I have both of those pumps by the way, but only use them to mix up saltwater. I won't trust them in my reefs. If one does burn up, all I lose is a barrel of saltwater, which I can toss out.

No Rio is any good. No complains about Sieos yet but I just won't trust the company, too many misshaps.

I witnessed RioMelt™ from a Rio 800 being used as a power head.

I too use an old 2500 to mix salt water in my trash cans :D

damn, i missed the opportunity to pick up a mag 9.5 for 65 bucks.

I am planning to get a new pump very soon, especially with the major tank remake,

They also have a somewhat bad tendency to short out and leak voltage even before they go bad. I've personally had either 2 (or 3) of my earlier purchases 'enliven' me with a nice  'charge'. I've had several and the larger ones (2100 up), do seem to fail badly when they go. I've still got 2 myself and one is still in use, but as soon as I have room to do something else, I'll replace it and use for water mixtures, etc. The Mags are great pumps, with a good warranty, longer than normal electrical cords, and a grounding prong that at least may trigger a GFCI unit before it 'bites' you.
