New to salt

Well, my cousin finnally got me started with saltwater. I have done freshwater for a long time but never saltwater. We picked up the equipment and livestock from a guy i worked with that wanted to go freshwater and used my 55gal tank i had extra. I was a little worried about trying to move an existing setup into a new tank but everything has gone pretty well so far. I ended up with about 75lbs or so of live rock, prizm protien skimmer, 2 rio 2100 power heads, 1 sally lightfoot crab, 1 four stripe damsel, 1 blue damsel, 2 yellow tail damsels, and a snail. We moved everything friday and everything is looking great today. I have a canopy i built with a PC 96w actinic, a 10000k, and a 12" cold cathode moon light. Here is a picture of my new tank.

Howdy and welcome to the obsession!!!

Sorry to say this, but I HIGHLY recommend replacing those Rio pumps ASAP. those pumps are known tank killers. (They're filled with oil, and can seize up, over heating, and dumping the oil into the tank, killing everything in the tank)

Other than that, looks like a good start!

I like them as well.
If you’re not really planning on adding any other fish, you will be ok.
But, after damsels are established, it is very difficult to add other fish.

Now if you really want to add other fish AND have a few damsels, make certain the other fish you are adding (after removing the current residents) can handle themselves somewhat.
then reintroduce a few of the damsels as your last few fish (also – you may want to rearrange some of your rockwork before putting them back in, this will make them reestablish their territories).

Keep in mind, many timid fish will not fair well with damsels.
Also, if you do this and lose any fish, you may have complications when you want to add that new fish later on down the road.
As you can see, they can be a bit troublesome to incorporate, that's why most people avoid them...

I just have only one in my tank, and he was added last!
BTW, very nice set up, good luck!

you should come by our next meeting, i think it is going to be over MACNA, should learn alot of cool stuff

I would say your lighting could be improved or at least matched colors and with what serk said get rid of the rio's. I had one kill one of my cichlid tanks. And the only good damsel are clownfish and chromis and ones not in my tank. I had one until he tried to kill my cleaner goby. Imagine that trying to kill a cleaner shees.

As soon as possible i am going to get two 50/50 96watt PC's. Right now i have an actinic on one side and a 10000k on the other :? As far as the rio's, i guess im going to start looking for something i can afford before i loose my livestock  . Thanks for the help.

I prefer the Danner Mag-Drives best, check out Marinedepot. Even after shipping prices are less than half LFS pricing. For your 55 I think I would go with a mag3 or mag 5.

Well, its been a couple months and all is well. I moved everything from my 55gal to a 75gal shortly after i started the tank. I have added very little so far but am itching to get some life going. My livestock is as follows. 1-zebra damsel, 1- blue damsel, 2- yellow tail damsels, 1- sally lightfoot crab, 1- decorator crab, 6- blue legged hermit crabs, 1- unknown small snail, two frags of encrusted gorgonian(doing great). I have two 50/50 96w PC lights, 100+ lbs live rock.
My question is what kind of livestock should i add now, Im itching to put something in there. My cousin is fixing to frag me up in about a week so i dont think that will be a problem, so i am thinking more clean up crew? Here are a few pictures of my tankhttp://www.abilenecichlids.com/page7/page8/page8.html
