Hello, my name is Brian.
I am mostly new to the hobby. I had a marine aquarium a few years ago but it was small and I didn’t have it long (though it thrived when I had it). I have been setting up a new 135 tank with about 160 lbs. of pre-packaged live sand and about 40 lbs. of rock so far. I expected it to be cloudy for a few days but it still really bad over 48 hours after adding water/sand at the same time. It doesn’t seem to be just sand, it seems like a really fine silt that actually foams up in the overflow. I am not worried about it other than from the standpoint of my live rock. Does the silt settling on the rock smother the bacteria I am needing to cycle the tank? I have a quietone 6000 powering the tank as well as 2 Koralia 1050 on each side for flow. There is a bleed off in my plumbing to return enough to the sump to help keep the overflow box up with the pump. Over the weekend I go so tired of the cloud I bought a hang on the back power filter to help with the clean-up but it’s futile compared to task at hand. My second question is where is all the silt going to go if I have no other means of mechanical filtration? I know it will probably settle but in the end it’s not going anywhere unless I take it out right? I just realized that turning off the power heads and pump for a few days will probably help but I just wanted to see what the community has to say about how long this might take and if my live rock is in danger or not.
Also, big thanks to Robert and Brandon at Fish2morow for all their help. I’ve been in their store for a year nagging with noob questions for a year and now I feel like I’ve spent a majority of the past 2 weeks there.
