[well, with the upcoming move (in june) - I want to go ahead and plan the new tank so i can move the livestock from the current tank to the new one without any holding tubs.

here is what i have so far:

acrylic 72" x 30" x 24" tank setup in a room divider fashion - similar to gregt setup on reefcentral - i will have a barebottom setup with cutting board - less flow though

there will be one overflow on the end that butts into the fish room - 3 2" overflows will be placed there - a sump will be placed into the stand with no refugium, at least for a while!

return will be via a blueline 100 fed into an oceansmotions 4 way that alternates to the 4 returns that will be along the sides of the tank - the 4 returns will feed into 4 om revolutions and will be drilled into the eurobracing

additional circulation will be via 2 tunze streams located one on each end - or possibly both on the end opposite the fishroom

protein skimming will be accomplished via my monster skimmer - fed from an iwaki 100 - i will be using my MRC dual calcium reactor and probably an uv sterilizer --- both of these will be fed from the blueline

topoff will feed through a kalk. reactor and will be controlled via the float switch system marc incorporates

lighting will be 3 250 watt DE halides and supplemented with 2 72" vhos (i think) - this will be suspended in a hood that sits above the tank, so the tank will be open on the top for ease of access and to help dissipate any heat.

oh, livestock will be geared towards several lps with some sps and maybe one or two softies - with zoos and mushrooms filling in between - 2 -3 clams -- fish will include the current residents of my 90 gallon (yellow mimic tang, 2 false perculas) and also the proposed list of 3 h. diphreutes (schooling bannerfish) and a purple tang - possibly, i might consider adding a blue regal tang - unlikely though. perhaps a blenny or two - no gobies for a while.

here are some diagrams of the proposed system - thanks and any feedback is greatly appreciated!]

[That is very exciting. I don't have anything to add at this time.]

[does anyone have any suggestions on whether to go with a room divider setup or the standard tank against the wall - i really love sitting and watching my tank, and i am afraid i will lose 1/2 of the corals if i go with a room-divider - i would have to move to the other side of the tank to see all of the corals - any ideas?? thanks.]

[My tank is a room divider. I had it custom built to fit on a low seat wall that divided the dining area of the kitchen and the family room. The tank dimensions are 60" long, 12" wide and 22" tall made out of Acrylic.

Here are some of the good and bad things I have noticed with this setup which has been up and running for over two years.

The Good:
I love that you can look right through the tank and you have twice the viewing area. Even though my tank is narrow by most standards I still was able to stack the rockwork in a narrow formation in the center of the tank. The rockwork is about 18" high at the wall end and slopes down to leave about a 12" open space at the open end. This creates effectively a 10' long swimming zone for the fish and they can go from one side of the tank to the other through holes in the rockwork. I also noticed that different sides of the tank received different amounts of flow so I could put mushrooms in low flow areas and other coral in high flow areas.

The Bad (or not so good):
Twice the glass (acrylic) to clean. My tank is acrylic and with it being narrow and tall it is very hard to clean it well. I get this brown diatom aglae that is very hard to clean off. Since my tank is narrow my corals are close to the acrylic I have to use the kent long scraper and I can't get enough leverage to clean it well. I also started to keep some SPS corals like green birdsnest and m. digitada. With my rockwork close to the sides it is only a matter of time that I have to trim or move the corals because they will start to touch the sides. With your tank being 30" wide you should not have too much of a problem but you will still have less room compared to setting up the tank against the wall.

Overall I like the divider effect and will probably do it again but the tank will be wider and made out of glass.

Just some thoughts]

[Room dividers are great. I loved mine.
The picture you saved belongs to jarheadbob I believe. It is a 170 gall DAS tank if memory serves.
Why are you going to put cutting board in an acrylic tank? I thought that was for glass tank. Just curious. I know Peter did his tank that way as well.]

[great feedback guys - thanks a lot! as for the acrylic vs. glass, i am still not sure which way i will go - at the moment, i am leaning towards acrylic - so much lighter and more clear --- but, if i can find a place to build me a quality glass tank with starphire on the two sides and the price is still decent, i might go that way -- the point about the extra swimming room is an excellent point, but i think that i would loose some places for the fish to hide - i plan on stacking the rock 3-4" away from the back of the tank if i go without the room divider, so they will still have the swimming space.

my reasoning for the cuttingboard is that is a little extra protection for the acrylic, not that it matters and it also will help to reflect the light up, until it is covered by coraline algae -- and, i like the look of the white on the bottom.

thnx for the heads up on the photo, i just love the finish and style.]

[oops, the skimmer will be in the fish room at one end of the tank - i will feed it from the "dirty" or receiving end of the sump and return it about halfway down the sump - thanks.]

[Just noticed this thread. I am doing a room divider also except alas no fish room. Everything is under. Were are you going to put your returns? In each corner? Trying to decided how to plumb mine to get good flow.]

[hi phillip

i am planning on doing the single overflow on the end that butts up against the fish room - as for returns, i am currently thinking of using an OceansMotions 4 way and have two returns on each side pointing opposite ways along the length of the tank - to supplement, i plan on using a tunze stream i already have, and perhaps, going with a closed loop - we will see.

[okay - after talking to scott (tank builder), this is what we have so far - pls let me know what you think:]

[here is my butcher job on his diagram :D

red lines are just to indicate measurements for hole placement ]
