New Skimmer Question

Ok, I have been talking to Marc about getting a new sump built (on hold for funds) and he asked what kind of Skimmer were we going to use.

I haven't given this enough thought so I Wanted to know what folks are running and what they are happy with. We have about 25" in our stand so we can go with a fairly tall skimmer or one that needs stand.

While cost is a factor I would rather save for a good one then buy a cheaper one I Would replace when funds become available anyway.

EuroReef?

Tunze?

What is the best Skimmer out there for the money?

depends a lot on the tank parameters - i.e. size, stocking of tank - bioload, ect - if it is bigger than 90 gallons, i would go with a beckett skimmer - they kick tail and there are about 5-6 brands at least to choose from - just my experience.

then again, the lifereef that is on the 92 gallon tank at the office is doing awesome - so, there are tons of good skimmers - IMO, i think it comes down to good maintenance and regular cleaning of the skimmer

I agree. When I purchased my skimmer I also considered the costs to run it. Compared to Beckett skimmers, Needlewheels like ASM, Euroreef, and Deltec consume less electricity.

The way I set my skimmer up was have the pump recirculating, all water coming from the tank is fed directly into the skimmer, and it has the gate valve on the output to control the water level inside the skimmer. I would say the flow from the return is around 300 gph or less. The slower flow will help the skimmer's efficiency since there is more contact time in the chamber. The rest of the circulation in my tank is handled by 2 streams.

that is an excellent point John, that is the main drawback on the beckett skimmers is that you end up using so much electricity due to the need for pressure rated pumps - so, that is a problem - i think as the recirculating skimmers such as yours and the deltec become cheaper or more easily diy, we will switch away from the beckett and towards the recirc, although, my guess is the move has already started - anyways, just some ramblings - thanks.

I did a ton of research before buying my new skimmer. The Euro Reef WON hands down. Ramin at Exotic Aquatics ran an ASM and a Euro Reef on the same tank in his shop and came away a believer after the Euro pulled about 3 times the amount out compared to the ASM. I pull a 2 liter of protein out a week with mine. Water stays nice a clean not a hint of nitrates. Here is a link to my unit and also the best place I found on the net to buy one for the cheapest price.

Barry has a Euro-Reef for sale, George. Either look for a thread the For Sale forum or PM "bfronc1".
