new rock and skimmer question

I just placed my new rock in my tank...filled it up with new water (RO/DI) and salt...All was good until my skimmer was turned on. It has gone nuts on me...foaming up the cup in about 10 seconds. I have fully opened my gate valve, so I have no more adjustment in it. If I let it run will it equal out at some point in time? Please help...

Thanks

We need more specifics. Most importantly, how is the skimmer plumbed into the sytem, i.e. is it in or out of the sump, are you using a sump or HOB?

With the addition of new rock your skimmer should produce massive amounts of skimmate if properly adjusted, but you should still be able to control it with the gate valve.

If you have an in sump model the water level may be too deep. The skimmer manufacturer should list a recommended water level for your specific skimmer. This is the most common cause of what you are describing with in sump models.

The skimmer is in sump....Its an octopus 150 NW.

The skimmer has been doing fine up until the addition of the rock. The levels in the sump have not changed with the addition of the rock. I have let it run for over an hour but have seen no change at all.

You already have the answer for the most likely reason for your problem. It is a wise man that follows the advice for which he seeks

I think what he's trying to say is:

"See ToddLaCo's reply above for your answer."

It ill take a while for the skimmer to get the gunk out from the new rock. Give it a few days.

I don't know about your skimmer, but can you could control the amount of air going in? if you have a venturi, you could close it some and would have less skimmate.
