New MJ1200 Mod - can hear propeller ticking

Just hooked my first of two MJ Mod's ordered from www.mjmods.com. I can hear the propeller turning within the tank. It is a faint sound, but enough that if I am zoneing out, staring at my tank, I can hear it.

Is this something on my construction part that I could have done wrong? Or is this something that is just expected of it?

Put together my 2nd one tonight and am waiting for the glue to cure over night to put it in tomorrow. I will test it out then to see if it makes the noise as well.

Any input is welcome in the mean time!

Cliff,
I have three pumps moded, and they are as quiet as before the mod. The only problem I have is they start backwards or jam sometime, but I'm working on them to stop that. Do not know what may be wrong with yours but they should be quiet...George Orndorf

did you use the plastic tubing or carbon fiber as the structure to hold the shaft in place? I think my noise may be the rod scraping against the carbon fiber.

I made my own mods and they work well, although, one of them does tick and vibrate a bit. I believe this may be due to the shaft being off center.

Running them on a wavemaker is not advised due to the methods of reversing the prop should it start in the wrong direction. Eventually, the prop will be destroyed. Now, on the other hand, the props are very cheap to replace. I can say that when a stop is installed to make it spin the other way, they make a hell of a noise when the prop hits it.

i am considering buying a new magnet and starting over on building the Mod up. there is a trouble-shoot post on RC that says to use the plastic tubing in place of the carbon shaft to reduce noise. figure that isn't a bad idea, but would think there is going to be more friction between the metal rod and the tubing since it is near impossible to make the plastic tubing straight. anyone have any knowledge on gph loss due to this?

except for the noise, these mods are incredible! you can feel and see the extra flow with ease. my Torch coral is hating it though, and had a clam die since I added the new ones (guess he hated the excess flow...), but sps is looking great. seeing some polyps on my blue-tip staghorn for the first time.

i am currently not using a wavemaker but do plan on adding one.

Just ordered my MJ1200 mod from quangtam. He advised that it may be too strong for a 55. I sure would love to see this in action! Sure beats paying hundreds for tunze or deltecs. I will start off with the plastic tubing and then upgrade to the carbon if need be.

Im excited! Let me know if the plastic helps on noise and chattering. Im tagging along here. I will not be adding a wavemaker

Good luck!

Just wondering if these really put out 2400 GPH. I mean, a "stock" MJ 1200 only does 295 GPH right? I just have a hard time believing this. If its true I may go this route instead of Tunzes, Are there magnet holders for them? How do you guys have them mounted?

Thanks
Angela

Angela - If ya' make it over here, I'll give ya' a live demonstration on just how wicked these things are...

Angela,

I wouldnt believe it if I had not done it myself! They totally blow out the stock MJ1200's. I have one that I just modified in my 55 and the flow out of them is so high that I have to place it in the lower right hand side and point it diagonal upwards toward the left to keep the sand from blowing around!

Totally kicks the tunze butt in my case. I'm not sure about longvitey though, but I know I'm NOT spending 300 hundred for a powerhead like tunze.

Cliff, I have a carbon shaff too. Some light vibration noise but I think that's coming from the point where the air hose line connects the blade shaft and the magnet together. They have to be perfectly linear to prevent that vibration noise

I still cant believe 2400 GPH. Do you guys think its that much? Going from less than 300 GPH to 2400 is a BIG jump. I might give them a try though. Serk I would like to see them in action. Yours are cool. Too bad those people that made yours are closed down. I just wonder if I could get them together right. I never really paid much attention when I heard about the mjmods but that is pretty darn impressive.

Thanks
Angela

I can't prove it's that high on the GPH, but it wouldn't surprise me...

Just like you can trade amperage for voltage in the electrical world, you're trading head pressure for volume with these mods. There's little to no back pressure anymore, since it's coming out in a big stream instead of a concentrated jet from a stock powerhead.

Once you make it over here, I'll shut everything else down in my tank, and let you see things moving in the breeze on the right side of my 6' wide tank from a single MJ1200 on the left side... :)

I had the same problem with a MJ mod. I took the carbon shaft out and sanded it down just a bit. I wrapped it in sandpaper and twisted to try to keep it round. It did help get rid of those ridges and make it quieter.

If you try it, let us know how it works.

THis is highly subjective however, I placed a MJ mod next to a Tunze 6100 and the force seemed greater from the MJ. The Tunze 6100 pushes 3,170 GPH. I can't "prove it, but I'm sure that it was greater than 2400 for sure. BTW, I compared this to a couple of my other MJ mods and there was a subjective "pressure flow" difference from PH to PH.

I have a 90g, should I get 2 MJ900s/w mods?

This is the only piece of equip still needed to setup my tank. I will purchase the powerheads soon, but need advice of size/ mod types.

I like the idea of a rotating powerhead.

Thanks for advice,

Gail

Gail,
The High Flow 1200 mods from MJMODS.com produce a whole lot of water movement... If you buy 2 kits for the 900, I'd suggest only mod'ing one of them to see how the flow works in your tank. If it's OK, then do the second one. If it's like the fish and corals are in a storm.. then just post the kit on the forum and I assure you it will sell for what you paided for it.

I installed a 1200 HO in my 58 gallon and it was too much! Way too much!
