Hellow everyone! Just wanted to do a quick write up about my new BC 14 setup and kinda introduce myself.
I never thought i'd get into the smaller aquariums because my wife has been keeping her 100 gallon FOWLR tank for about 5 years now in the living room. I am proud of our 4 year old Purple Tang that is about 5 1/2". I thought it would be fun starting up a new "nano" tank in our bedroom that I take care of and hopefully watch it succeed. I have recently just gotten into corals (softies/LPS) so I am very excited about starting some new colonies in my BC 14. Here is what I have done so far.....
Set up BC 14 on 2/24
added approx 15llbs LIVE rock in display
added 20 LBS carib-sea "live" sand, then added 2-3 cups of LIVE sand from our established 100 gallon to seed it
Took out bio-balls immediatley and added LR rubble
added 12 gallons of our 100 gallon aquarium water (hope this was a good idea??????)
added 1 krill to help initiate cycle
waiting,waiting,waiting,waiting
A few questions I have for those of you that have a smooth running BC 14.
1) I bought a 10W submersible halogen light I plan on using for chaeto in the 2nd compartment with the LR rubble. Is this a good idea, or is it a waste? Not sure if enough chaeto can fit back there to do any good.
2) If you do have chaeto in the 2nd chamber, do you HAVE to run a media basket, or can you just do 1/2 LR, 1/2 chaeto. Then put the lid back on top of the 2nd chamber with maybe a bag of carbon on top?
3) Do you need to upgrade the stock pump? I think it is rated at about 137 GPH. I have bought a Koralia Nano 240 powerhead that I am waiting to receive in the mail to add flow.
4) I have heard people removing the elbow on the return nozzle and just running the tubing from the pump directly to the nozzle. Does this help the flow enough to do a modification?
Thats about all I can think of now, but i'm very glad I found this as I have been reading tons of forums online and I"m glad I found one that there is local people! BTW, I am in the north Fort Worth area.
Cheers,
Brian
