New closed loop with squirt

[Well I have spent a whole lot more time then I planned to on this. The plumbing is crazy. 3/4 to 1 1/2" back and forth.

Anyway the device at the top is the new Oceans Motions SquirtSquirt link

I was tired of my 3/4" plumbing and the loss due to the SCWD/ I my Mag 12 I am guessing I was only getting ~600 GPH. I replumbed everything and used 1.5" plumbing on this. It has 4 outlets vs 2.

I finally finished all the glueing today so I'll wash it out and hook it up tommorow!

The part going down from the pump is the intake which will obviously be pointed up when installed.

If I ever get a new tank I'm going to have a ton of holes drilled in the back and/or sides!!!!

I'll let you know how it goes when I hook it up!]

[I made something very similar but with a twist. The problem I had was flow. I was running it with a Velocity T4 and unless I capped all outputs and drilled them with a smaller hole for outputs it would not generate the flow/current I wanted.

I am wondering if you are going to have the same problem? Mine was on 3/4 plumbing.]

[With that many outputs no wonder.

A T4 is about 1200 GPH @ zero head. Assume with the piping and bends you are getting 1000 or so. That means with 10 outlets you were getting 100 gallons or less out of each so I can imagine out of 3/4" you could barely feel it.

It's important to note that you have the same amount of flow when capping you are just increasing the velocity or concentrating that flow. You should hook a Mag 24 up to that thing then we would be talkng! Seriously though that is a nice design.

No I'm not to worried about a flow problem. I think with all the bends and pipes I'll get about 1000GPH also from my Mag 12. The Squirt only allows about one and one half of the four outlets to be open at once. So at it's peak each output will be somewhere in the 700GPH neighborhood. So about seven times the velocity of yours but same overall flow. If you clogged all but 1 and a half outputs on yours you would get roughly the same.

I am on the extreme side of turnover at this point. In a 135 I have 2 Tunze 6000's ( 1800 GPH each) running on a contrioller at 40% 100% alternating so ~2500GPH from those. Two Seio 620's so 1200 GPH more. ~400GPH from sump return. A maxijet 1200 ~250. and this closed loop at ~1000 so I have ~5350 GPH in the display or 40x turnover!]

[That was the point I was trying to make. With that size PVC I was thinking you would loose head pressure. I was assuming (not knowing the specifications of the squirt) that it oscillated like a squid not keeping the pressure at a constant drive to the output. Or do they? I have never seen either in operation]

[I've got a squirt running on mine with a Dolphin 900 with 1/2"outlets. There is very little headloss due to the squirt. I originally had it plumbed with a Mag 9 and 3/4" PVC similar to what I had on the SCWD. All I can say is wow  I had to switch to the Dolphin after breaking the MAG 9 volute. It will relocate corals if they are not glued down. The SCWD is great, but nothing compared to this thing. I'm also running 2 90 degree revolutions in the front corners of the tank to change up the flow even more. The SPS love it, but my softies don't care much for it. With the revolutions, it's hard to move them to a location where they don't get hammered with flow.

I know, I know, where are the pics. I'll try to get some tonight. I'd post a short video if I had a way to post it.

By the way, good job Keith! Your going to love it.

My only complaint about the unit is the tendency for it to stop rotating due to sand in the drum. Mine moved a lot of sand around for about a week. Paul at OM is sending me a new drum with a metal disk imbedded in it to increase the magnet strength. It should fix that problem.]

[Chris, does your T4 heat the tank?

I have a Mag9.5 and a T4 and my tank is running at about 80-82 degrees, with the ambient room temp at 76 and NOTHING else electric in the tank, and no lights.

6 degrees from a #### pump, if I wasn't hard plumbed to it I'd consider replacing it =/]

[Mark

the T4 is external and added no heat that I can speak of. I did run a MAG 9.5 as a return on my previous tank (75g Non rr)(which is also for sale)and this did add quite a heat load. With my new system I finally broke down and bought a chiller for it. With the MH and the room I have it in the sun would set and the room would shoot up and tank too :sniffle:]

[Ok bear with me as I just finished this thing and only the actinics are one.

General comments. I can tell the flow is greater without the SCWD and with the bigger plumbing. When one is on at full blast now it feels slightly "harder" than my 620 Seios which is about was I was expecting. Somewher e in the 700 GPH rang with the outlet at full tilt. (300 or so split between one or two other outlets)

I have a very slight cavation noise which is very odd since the intake is 1.5" all the way to the adapter to take it down to 3/4 for the Mag input. If i turn the output down slightly with the ball valve it goes away. Hopefully after stopping and starting it a few times this will go away!

The flow pattern created by it is awesome! I can actually see things "sway" from one side to the other now. It is actually very natural and gentle though. The fish don't seem to mind at all!

Here are the crappy pics. I'll post better ones sometime.

First one is looking at the tank. I have labled the closed loop parts.

First is right side back then left side back and finally a left side bottom shot to get a good view of the Mag 12.

Whew!! Mainly I'm just glad I'm done!]

[Yep. My water only drops about 1/2 inch or less when I turn the return off. I poked so many holes in it that there is very little suction so I actually tested that last night and there were no issues. I was prepared to do a slight mod if I needed to but it would have been an easy one!]

[I'm really glad that worked out as planned Keith.

[Good deal. I can't wait till I get my larger tank going. I am thinking of going with the 4-way so I can use a little larger pump. Looks good.]

[I would highly highly suggest a 4 way. Just spend the extra money. Get a big pump to run it (maybe even a Mag 24 for a tank my size). The plumbing would be super easy and it could serve as your only flow besides your return! Still cheaper than buying a couple Tunzes!]

[Agreed. I have an Ampmaster 3000 on the return and another 3000 w/ a 4-way on a closed loop. I love it, and the flow is great!.]
