I'm putting together a 29g mixed for some softies, sea horses and a couple other small docile critters.

Looking for comments / suggestions:

Here's what I have so far – started putting this together this weekend:

29g (30 X 12 X 18)
Aqua C Remora skimmer, with pre-filter and overflow
~1" sand bed
~15lbs of established live rock that will come from my main
Some skeletal coral for deco and sea horse holds
Maybe some additional base rock
A HOT filter primarily for charcoal and bio media
Heater
4 HO T5’s 96w, 2 - 10,000 and 2 - actinic (on order)

Planned livestock:
Seahorses
Mandarin
Ricordea
Zoanthid
Harlequin brittle
A couple snails
Maybe a pair of fire fish
Shaving brush algae

I looking for some input on:
Feeding
Other types of algae I could add
Lighting comments
If I should work in a refugium (maybe something in the future)

mandarin might compete for the pods. other than that sounds like a good setup.

Yeah the mandarin would be hard-pressed in a tank that size to find food unless you are replenishing or have the fuge intact.

Might I suggest some pipe fish????

Algae, try a couple of mangroves perhaps??

Yeah I'd probably cancel the mandarin as well. The ponies will need all the pods they can get. For feeding, it'd be best for the horses if you set up a feeding station. I used a piece of clear tubing that went from the surface down to a "trough" which was a tupperware container. You drop thawed frozen mysis into the tube and it drops into the trough. This keeps the food still so that the horses can eat what they want and you can discard the rest. They'll also need to eat at least twice a day.

The lighting may also be a concern. Ponies don't like bright lighting. I had a single 96watt pc on my horse tank and it was 25" deep. Gorgonians and macros will do fine in lower light and provide natural hitch posts as well. I had Halimeda, "dragon's breath," shaving brush, and red grape kelp in my ponies tank as well as three different types of gorgonian. Good luck and hope this helps a bit.

heres a pic of it so far, with some live rock and dead corals

the eggcrate in the back is a wall that will be about 1/2 full of rock rubble and some cheato, waiting on my t5s and still looking for some other macro algeas then i'm ready to add some zoas, rics and the ponies
