New 14g nano help

Just picked this tank up yesterday, not use to the all in ones.. There's black stuff floating on the surface, I'm guessing the filter isn't very good? Also the pump is making a loud rattling noise, also how high do you fill these? Thanks for any help on this all in one!
Also got 25ish lbs of rock put some in my 30gallon the rest will be going in shortly.

Here's a pic of it so far.

Take out the bio balls if it has any. The return pump should not make any noise so just move it around until it stops IMO you should take the filter media in the back, that's if you are gonna have live rock in the tank, the live rock works as your biological filtration and you won't need the bio balls since that's the purpose oh having those in the back. I have a 24g

Good luck

Yah it has bio balls in the 3rd chamber, I will remove them and break some rock up for it. I messed with the pump but can't get rid if the noise, the loud part is the one fan on top...

If I was you I would leave it all empty all that rock is going to do is build up detritus in the back, and it will make nitrates to add up in your tank. In this case, filter sock prior to water changes... stir it up and then with a pretty high flow pump, run it through a filter sock and back into the tank... I mean that's just what I do in my tank you can always do what works better for you or do a bit of more research.

This is where I started when I got my BioCube. I haven't been disappointed yet with anything from there.

Someone recommended a mj 900 pump for my jbj 14, do you have to do any modding for this swap? My stock pump is really loud/annoying. Any pics would help as well of how you have your back setup! Also what heater/pump/skimmer your running and powerhead if you are. I'm looking at the rapidled 14 biocube for LEDs, anyone running them on there jbj? Thanks guys

When the lighting is on, the fans in the hood turn on to circulate and extract air within the hood.... That's normal, but I agree...it's rather noisy. Fan should turn off with the lights.

You don't have to do any modding for the mj900 to fit. I put mine in and positioned it so the inlet is facing the extra space by the water level marker. I ended up ditching the good and had a ai nano over it. The only other moding I did was cutting the wall level in between chamber 1 and 2 so that the intank media basket would have better flow. Then I cut a DVD case to make spacers to fit in between the Gap. Hope that helps

Yeah I forgot you have a nano and I have a biocube. But it does have three chambers. You should still be able to put that mj900 in there no problems though.

I had a similar issue and I super glued mine in the tank, if your talking about the piece that's in the display? The mj900 is stronger so it probably wouldn't stay on if you didn't

Thanks forth the tip! Where could I get one from? This floated to the top of the pump chamber.

Also my apt floor isn't lvl so I can't fill to the max line, and the hood always has condensation in it, is that normal? It was horrible when I got it.
