New 120 pass through

Well my new house is far enogh along and I had the builder build a in wall (pass through) tank. Let me know what you guy think so far.

One question, do you think the sand will hold with out putting legs in the middle on the back side?

You need to tell me the size of the lumber for the unsupported beam and the length. Why is there no base plate for the 2 by 4's on the front? How are they attached to the floor?

there is a base plate I think you just have to look close at the picture. I will go out to the house tomorrow and get all the info for you.

thanks

Personally, considering that it is a new house, I would have more supports under the base plate. For comfort sake, it's always better to be overbuilt then it is to be underbuilt.

You never know when that thing may come plummeting down, considering tanks can weigh a lot :)

Based on the fact that you're planning this from the beginning, with the other thread about the chiller - it definately needs to be located somewhere else. Putting it in the stand is like putting your air conditioner condenser in the living room. Even with a vent and fans it's going to be nearly impossible to cool the area while blowing it's own hot moist air right back into itself.

Look up some articles on chiller types - I think you need to put it outside and run the lines into the tank room or something like that.

BTW, that stand is going to need full perimeter support.

The front of the tank stand (where the 2x4 supports are) is way stronger than you need. It'll be fine as is, no worries.

The 2x6 on the open back needs support at both ends and maybe in the middle--so you'll want a base there too. What you have *might* be ok, but when the foundation shifts (and it will if you live in the Dallas area), you might see some separation between the 2x6 and the connected studs. Honestly, I'd be reluctant to build-in a stand for this reason alone. A free-standing design will allow you to shim edges as necessary. But, that's just my opinion. What you have looks ok except for the back which I'm just not real sure about.

Also, I can't see in the pictures how the frame is constructed at either end. Make sure it's setting on supports and not simply nailed to adjacent studs. In general, don't "borrow" support from the frame of the house. The tank stand needs to stand on it's own. (lol).

All that said, I'm not a professional engineer which is really who you need advice from.

Good luck man, looks like fun stuff!

okay I talked to the builder yesterday and told him that we should put more support on the back side.

mukymuk- that wall that the tank's on is not a load baring wall, so hopefully it should be fine for years.

I'll post new pic in the next few days.

final moved in and got somewhat organized. Here are some new pics. Hopefully I will have some thime over the chirstmas holiday to get the rock and water in.

Okay i just got done building my LED light system so i thought i would update with New pics of the tank and equipment. Let me know if there are any questions about the tank. I know the refugium reflector is the most expensive piece of equipment on the tank. [smilie=rofl.gif]
