need your critiques and suggestions for ca

Just ran tests with new Salifert kits for the first time.

Results:
Mg 1230
Alk 3.77
Ca 370
Nitrate 12
Temp 79
I use IO salt mix
Did a 20% water change yesterday (every 2 weeks)

Tank is 13 months old. 37 gal tank, hob refugium, skimmer

I have a 2 1/2" maxima and 2 sps about 1" tall each.
I'm trying to get my calcium higher for the clam, so I'm dosing B-Ionic 15ml in the morning. Do I just need to increase the dosage? Instructions say 1ml for every 4 gal.

Julie run your numbers through here.

To get your calc up to to 400 it is goign to take 69ml or 2.3 fl oz.

Personally if I have to bump my Ca I use Kent Turbo Calcium. It would take 2 tsp. to get you to 400.

PLay with the calc and then you can decide.

Great site Steve, thanks. According to the article, I need to add a calcium suppliment, the alkalinity is too high and test, test, and test again.

I tend to agree with slallan FWIW. The 2 parts are good for maintaining your levels once you have them at optimum levels first. The kents turbo Ca will get you where you need to be much cheaper then figure out your daily consumption rate and then dose accordingly. You can also use the cheaper diy 2 part solutions, not sure if you have the link for the diy recipe's. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/april2004/chem.htmas

Cheers!

That stuff is great but it can get expensive.... Tri purchased some back a year ago and when I added it to the tank it was gone in a flash... but then again that's what happens with a large tank.

An alternative solution to help maintain your Ca and also your alkalinity is lime mixed with RO water to make kalk.... Its the cheapest solution, and its my preferred solution since I am CHEAP... :p

Or you can go with a calcium reactor too...

I agree pickling lime solution is a good choice.....Maybe the diy 2 part solution would be another low cost choice.

unless you have a kalk reactor, I think adding kalk is a PITA. I use 2 part right now, I love Kalk, have several Mr. Wages packages. Just don't want to have to mix it every night.
