Need refugium ideas? - Help please :)

[I am trying to help a friend set up a fuge. He has a 140 with a 20 gallon sump. I thought it would be easiest to just add another 20 gallon and set up as pictured. Is there an easier way?]

[I like that way, its how I had planned to do mine until I ran out of room in my stand :(

I'd cut the return up higher though, so if the power goes out it doesn't back siphon into the sump and drop the water level in the fuge to much.

Another option, if its an option...is to put it on a shelf above the tank, which would be ideal for getting pods etc into the main tank from the fuge.]

[This is very similar to how I have mine done. The only difference is instead of having a pump dedicated to the refuge, I tee'd off the main return line. I put ball valves after the tee to adjust the amount of water heading to the main tank versus the fuge.

so it goes

Pump===T===ball valve======main tank
||
||
====ball valve======refuge

This cuts down on the heat added to the tank by the second pump.]

[trying again...

edit... :cussing: :cussing: :cussing:

looks right untill i upload it.... :cussing:]

[Mitch,, instead of adding another pump to the water, Why dont you put a tee on your return to run a line into the refugium section. Would be one less pump and you could control the flow in the refugium as well.

What size Magdrive pump are you using for your return ?

[instead of the tank pipe going into the sump area direct it over to the refugium which will cut out 1 pump and then just let it drain into the sump are and back to the tank.

You can put a fiber sock over the opening on drain pipe which will stop junk and waves in the refugium.]

[thats the way I had mine natilus,, but since my overflow has two outlets I just directed one of them into the refugium and the other into a baffled space ,,,,,

[What? you don't want to skim after the refugium.

The way you have it you are also skimming after the fuge.
You should skim before the return pump and after the refugium.

So Refugium-Skimmer-Return pump. :nod:]

[I think you would want to skim before the fuge, those little bugs will take a beating in that skimmer. Since the water flow is left to right, little water from the fuge should make it back to the skimmer. But I could be wrong I have no "fuge" experiance.]

[The one thing I would worry about, is using a maxijet powerhead to push the water that high/far...maxijets lose GPH real fast with plumbing after them.]

[If you skim before the refugium then you are taking food away from your copods etc..

The little critters will live through almost anything except a blender.
I have thousands of them that live through 3 mag pumps and 1 is for the UV filter.]

[I'm using a mini jet to run through my phosban reactor and full blast it moves maybe 150 gph (a nice stream), the maxi should deliver 200+ gph. I thought low flow was necessary for a fuge?? Could use my mag 3.5 but I dont think it is going to matter much.

Keep the ideas rolling!! I can jump to conclusions too easy and need yall to put me on the right track.]

[Keep in mind the flow rate through the skimmer section is fast enough that it's not going to skim all the pods anyway. If you have a long enough settling time in your skimmer section to do that, the efficiency of your skimmer is wasted to begin with. Having the skimmer before or after the refugium doesn't matter. It's a matter of what orientation you can fit best in your stand.]

[Mitch, that is the way I have the 135 setup.

The only thing that I have to add to the previous replies is to make the gravity drain as large (and as high) as you can manage. Mine is 1 1/4 and wouldn't you know it... one of those #$@#$ turbos actually managed to grow big enough to block it.

What a mess! Finding saltwater on the floor is bad enough but having seaweed floating in the kitchen is another! :oops:]
