Need help with structural integrity of a stand

Well, my current stand has a center brace on the front of the tank and its driving me nuts. Im hoping to redesign the stand and build a new one to get rid of it. Getting the protein skimmer out and what not is just a hassle.

So, by doing what most of the people here are doing, will a 2x4 across the front and back hold the weight? Im plan on doing it like this:

thanks JBsmurf for the pic

Will 2x4's cut it or do I need a 2x6? I will probably use 1/2" plywood to cover the whole outside. Im looking to have the most access to the fuge/sump to prevent my lazy butt from NOT cleaning it.

Thanks

What are the dimensions of the base/tank. If you are in the 5' to 6' span a 2x6 would be the best to use on the long span(front). :)

Its a normal 55gal...so 48" wide?

If you're going to run a standard 55 as your tank and another 55 as the sump, you might want to check the inside dimensions of the stand.

Im going to build a new stand a big bigger so that it fits. And I feel safer with a bigger base.

you could park a tank on top of that.

Verical 2 x 4 have incredible pressure ratings. I mean, they hold up houses after all.

I would agree with whats been said. I way overbuilt my stand but thats just me I like heavy furniture. What your planning to do should be fine. I trust 2x4 but would never trust just plywood to hold the weight of any tank of that size. Good luck and let me know if you need any other help. The stand you pulled that pic from was designed by myself and structural engineer.
