nano lighting

just curious, does anyone know what kind lighting you can get from homedeopt that would be suffecient for a 20" wide hex nano? i wanna diy it, and i figure someone out there has shopped locally for it

It all really depends on what you're wanting to keep, but IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) there's not much at Home Depot for anything other than the simplest of softies or refuguims...

However, if you're wanting to get a decent amount of quality light over a nano tank, DIY it, and do it as cheap as possible, I highly recommend getting some 36" PC kits from AH Supply:

http://www.ahsupply.com/

I've got one of their 13 watt kits over each of my 6 refuguims, 2 of their 13 watters over my reef as moon lights, and another 2 over my reef as red night viewing lights...

As long as you weren't wanting to keep SPS/Clams/Anemone's or the like, a few of the 36 watt PC's over a 20" nano tank should be quite nice...

(Assuming you're not wanting to go with a 150w MH, of course... :) )

Edit - DOH! Just noticed the "Hex" part... Not sure if the 36 watt PC's would work in that scenario. You might could cram a bunch of 13 watt PC bulbs up there, not too sure without seeing it, but I really don't think you're gonna find what you're after at Home Depot... I've tried, believe me... :)

Even a single 55/65w PC bulb would fit over a tank that is 20" wide, and you'd get quite a bit of light.

Or you could get a small 70w or 150w double-ended MH bulb, which would fit beautifully.

There's a vendor that sells a retro kit for $130 on nano-reefs.com - or something along those lines. Dien knows who.

96 Watt PC - Too much light? I don't think so... however...

A 96 Watt PC bulb is 35 inches long.....

Ah, is it one of those that has 4 tubes on one bulb? Not terribly familiar with those I'm afraid, but as far as the overkill part, not everyone agrees, but I'm of the opinion that you can't have too much light over a reef using current technology...

ok, well since overkill isn't really an option, then I decided to go ahead and hook it up and WHOLLY COW
first, the lights wouldn't come on, so stupid me, I decied to check the plug and make sure it was pushed in all the way without remebering to turn it off
and arc shot across there that you could weld with, and I had it flipped upside down to check, and Blinded myself, and fell on the stand, Jeeesh, someone should warn you about these things ROFL
