my tank is slightly off and I can't find where

This is the second time in the past few weeks that this has happened. My trumpets are "withdrawing," acan isn't open, same with my frogspawn, and some zoas. I've added some zoas this weekend and changed out sumps to a better one, but kept the same water. I also did a 20% WC last night as I do weekly. Some of the "sensitive" things, my nems, xenia, SPS, knock on wood is all doing ok.

Salinity 1.025 (refractometer)
Alk 10 (red sea pro)
Calcium 430 (red sea pro)
Mag. 1350 (red sea pro)
nitrates are under 5 ppm (salifort, api, seachem)

I did take the cover off my return pump, so it's blowing and going, it could just be a mutiny against the extra flow, and I know the levels aren't optimum but they are not bad, so thoughts? Last time this happened after a day or so everything started acting happy

Could be reacting to the glue used during your change over. Are you running fresh carbon in a reactor?

I don't have a reactor so I took a filter sock with carbon and stuck the drain hose from my tank into it so all the water running through my tank must first go through that, hopefully that will pull out what is bugging everyone. Thanks!

That's not a very optimal solution, but would work for a day or two. If you have a Phosban Reactor, use that for the carbon. 1/2 cup per 50g at a very slow rate is perfect. 50gph is more than enough.

Higher flow rates will cause the carbon to grind up against itself, sending fines into the system and into the gills of your fish. An article came out a few months ago about how carbon dust was hurting yellow tangs. It's important to rinse the carbon well before using it.

I rinsed it for about 10 minutes, enough so that when water was pumped through it, the water didn't show very much of the dark at all, if any. Now after your post, I'm glad I did, and a phosban reactor will be on my "purchase" listed tomorrow. Thanks!

went out, got a phosban reactor and hooked it up with carbon (bought a small maxi-jet - 600) and it's running as we speak, the tank is happy! thanks for the advise

Great, Tj. That should help. I run carbon all the time, changing it out bi-weekly.
